Question about 1991 Eagle Talon

1 Answer

Wont idle, turns off randomly

I don't know much about cars or even driving manuals but i bought a talon thinking i would learn stick well it didn't work out. so i found a friend willing to buy it. well he started driving it and it just would shut off while driving or idling. sometimes it just wont start at all. i was told my a mechanic not to long ago it wasn't the alternator. and i had to get the battery replaced. didnt work.  but i guess I'm just going to get the alternator replaced anyways. :?

The ground between the engine and body/frame may be loose. The ground often looks like a woven peice of wire (Flat) and may be near the rear of the engine. check the connection and make sure ther is no corrosion betweeon the connections

Revs high

If the idle speed is normal until you shift into a gear, the idle air control valve is probably raising the idle speed. Try unplugging the iac motor at idle then shift into drive.
If the IAC is raising the RPM the computer controls it, so for some reason the computer thinks the RPM needs to go up. I am assuming you do not have a check engine light on or you would have checked for trouble codes.
Just for the record, I am showing the same IAC for both transmissions on a 2.0 engine code 3.
Is it possible the battery was disconnected and the learn process needs to be done for the computer to know where normal idle speed is ?

Check and see if it has thrown any codes. Autozone will hook up their OBD for free. My thinking it is a sensor or a vacuum leak. Good luck.

I have a 1991 eagle talon none turbo, i had to reset the timing on it due to the fact that the owner before me advanced it for racing purposes. but the problem is when i did this the idle will hold...

Most of the cars that I have worked on and even on my 2001 Dakota have the same conditions when starting. This is in part due to the fact that the computer is scanning all the sensors and setting a perimeter for the computer control of all the systems such as fuel and air delivery and ignition control systems. So this is normal and would be a problem if the idle didn't come down.

The idle speed control valve on my 96 Jag VDP was sticking in the open position causing a high idle in the 2,000 RPM range. I had to disconnect it, remove it and manually pull out the plunger to reseat it....

TAKE IT TO DEALERSHIP.THEY WILL ADJUST AND REPROGRAM IDLE TO LEARN.WHEN YOU BUY A NEW IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE THE PCM HAS TO REPROGRAM TO LEARN ITS NEW IDLE POSITION.

My 1996 eagle talon tsi (just bought) idles rough but when I drive its smooth, no rough idle. I need to know what is wrong with it and how to fix it

It may be a dirty air cleaner or a dirty Idle Airflow Valve . The IAC can be cleaned by taking off the duct work that goes from the air assembly to the fuel injector hole. The valve is to one of the sides of the hole just inside. You will see two small holes. Buy some card cleaner and with your engine running at about 1300 rpm spray the cleaner directly into these holes. Spray for a good 10 seconds. Stop the engine and let the cleaner soak in. Repeat this about 4 times. If it still idles rough it may be the Idle position sensor or you have to replace the IAC.

I have a 92 eagle talon tsi awd turbo.my question is when i start my car it idles high then drops down then goes up and its driving me crazy.now i was told to fix the speed control sensor or the throttle...

yeah, eclipse/talon does have alot of problems with the IAC motor being no good, but by your description, it sound more like a vacuum leak, to trace for a vacuum leak isn't fun, check all your vac hoses for cracks just being so old, anything could happen, make sure your intake manifold is not leaking, that's what happened to mine, or the easiest way is to take the car to a shop that has a "smoke machine"
what it does is put smoke into you intake manifold, where ever there is a leak, the smoke will finds it way out, make it alot easy to find vac leaks
