Best thing to do is check the fluid condition, dark or burned smelling fluid would indicate the clutches are worn out. The problem may also lie within the vvalve body, if for some reason the connection to the spool is damaged, it could only work when shifting into reverse. I try to make this may standard answer when it comes to transmission. Let a professional look at and repair, they are very complicated.

your inner tie rod end either broke at the ball joint or it was not installed properly and came loose from the steering rack. Either way there should have been an issue with the steering prior to the popping noise. If there is power steering fluid there had to be damage to the rack and pinion unit and it will have to be replaced.

if automatic the dip stick is under the bonnet on the left hand side if you are facing the front of the engine it is at the back of the engine just to the right of the rocker cover and may be hard to see because of wires it has a black loop handle ok
