Question about Volkswagen Cars & Trucks
This sounds like you have the wrong bulbs installed in your tail lights. I'd go to the local auto store and have them look up the proper bulbs ( there are likely two on each side) and ensure you have them installed properly, and they are the right bulbs

Check the TAILGHT FUSE. GM's unusual way of letting you know there is something wrong. Otherwise how often do you check your tailight operation. Only by another driver telling you, your tailights aren't working, would you know. Hope this helps.

I've seen this more than once. Do you have a towing hitch? Sounds like you got a wiring problem with a trailer harness. If you do have a harness then check all the wires to be sure none rubbed through.
