I experienced this problem shortly after getting my new 1996 Ranger. My problem was the speed sensor. The truck OD light was on and the overdrive did not work. Easy fix is to replace sensor located on the rear differential cover (pumpkin).

If not Speed Sensor, then previous comment agreed could be need a new switch due to faulty wiring. You can reset the warning lights by disconnecting battery negative for 15 min. I f light doesnt come on for a while then switch is probably good.

Possibly the wire has broken inside the shifter where the wire comes out, then goes in the column cover. happens a lot. you need a new shift lever assy. the lamp should go out when you turn the vehicle off, unless they are shorted together, which then you can disconnect the plug under the shroud or column cover.........jim

What causes 1996 Dodge Neon SOHC automatic transmission to delay or slip shifts?

that is a hum dinger, largest ever posted, in one shot.
very good.!
one word , the transmission slips. (never drive a slipping tranny)
overheat indicator.! that is key.
many newer cars will change the transmission shifting any time
the engine over heats.
and overheat wins over transmission , every time.
if the engine burns up, what good is any transmission.? nada.

solve overheat first.

slip or flare.
is when the engine RPM rises fast and the car dont go faster.
SLIPS.
and slipping burns up trannyclutchs and increases the damage. inside the transmission, dont do that. dont allow it,
park it and fix it.

on some tranny there is a temperature sensor that the TCM
watches and changes shift patterns based on AFT fluid temps.
and if the ATF fluid gets too hot , it takes actions. to keep the tranny from harm.

why not get a scan too and see what DTC errors there are..
DTC, engine overheate.
DTC< tranny overheat (caused by above)

I have a 2002 f150 and the code P1121 comes up on the code reader. Will this have any effect on the Transmission? When I started driving the truck, I shifted it in Drive as per normal but this time it...

yes the problem is the throttle position sensor. you need a new one. it isn't shifting because the transmission isn't getting a signal from the tps. so it thinks your foot is all the way to the floor so it wont change into 3rd until it redlines. change the sensor before you damage the transmission. It is easy to change. its on the throttle body on the side of the throttle plate. it reads the angle of the plate. two screws and one wire connection

My 2001 chevy suburban feels heavy like it wont shift

check transmission fluid level, could be very low transmission slipping not going into over drive.if been long time change transmission fluid and filter.if transmission fluid filter already been changed other problems cause transmission not to shift could have worn broken need adjusting.governor valve sticking, governor drive gear worn, governor weights or springs missing or damaged. you could have sticking first and second shift valves.your first and second servos pistons seals stuck or damaged. do fluid change and add some high mileage transmission treatment go to any auto parts stores find transmission additive that will loosen up transmission sticking shift valves in the valve body. if your check engine light is on have vechicle code scan for faulty tps in which will cause transmission not to shift over drive.

Lincoln LS2000, transmission hesitates to shift from park into any gear. No problems with shifting through gears in regular driving. Is this a major repair? Only 113,000 mi.

Inspection is required.
