How do replace ignition control module in 1998 K-1500 5.0 liter vortec


This system does not use the ignition module used on the DI systems in the past. The VCM controller now controls the ignition control (IC) and bypass functions.
The crankshaft sensor, located in the front engine cover, is perpendicular to a target wheel attached to the crankshaft. The target wheel is equipped with slots situated 60 degrees apart. As the crankshaft rotates, the target wheel rotates past the crankshaft position sensor. The rising and falling edges created by the slots cause a signal to be sent back to the VCM. This signal occurs three times per crankshaft revolution and is referred to as the 3x signal for V6 applications. The signal occurs four times per crankshaft revolution and is referred to as the 4x signal for V8 applications.
The VCM then utilizes this 3x (V6) or 4x (V8) signal in order to provide the correct spark to the engine by way of the single coil driver module. The single coil driver module is basically an electronic switch that when commanded by the VCM, causes the primary coil voltage to breakdown, energizing the secondary coil and providing a spark via the coil wire to the distributor cap. The distributor consists of the following components:

The camshaft drives the distributor shaft which rotates providing a spark to the correct cylinder by way of the cap and rotor. The camshaft position (CMP) sensor functions much like the crankshaft sensor previously described but provides only a 1x signal to the VCM. That is, for every 2 rotations of the crankshaft, there is 1 rotation of the camshaft. Note that the camshaft position sensor will not affect driveability. The sole purpose of the camshaft position sensor is to provide the VCM with the necessary information for the misfire diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

I have no spark in the coilpack and n spark in the spark plug wire as well


A failed crank sensor can prevent your car from getting a spark.
When cranking the car's computer looks for a signal from the crankshaft indicating the crankshaft is turning to enable spark and fuel. A timing belt that has broken in some cars can cause no fuel and no spark since the crankshaft position sensor gets no signal that the overhead camshaft is turning.

Sounds like a bad crank position sensor or a bad camshaft position sensor.... If the sensors can't tell the ecm where the position the crankshaft or camshaft is, the ecm won't know when to send a spark. So the ecm won't send any spark.

I have replaced the camshaft sensor, Crankshaft sencor, computer, crankshaft pully, and new spark plugs on my 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse and it still won't start, what could it be?


Engine needs spark, fuel and air to run. I assume the starter is turning the engine over. Have you verified you have spark at the plugs? Have you verified you have fuel pressure? Can you hear the fuel pump when you first turn the ignition key? If, yes to those, check the timing belt settings to make sure something hasn't caused the timing to change.

If you have no spark, and you replaced the Crankshaft Position sensor, you may have a faulty Camshaft Position sensor, failed Timing Chain or stretched Timing Chain, or a faulty ECM. Since the Camshaft Position sensor doesn't cost much, I would start with that after checking the Timing.
Also, be sure to check the condition of the Connector going to the Crankshaft Position sensor and Camshaft Position sensor.

      • The sensor is mounted in a fixed position in the engine block. The tip of the sensor protrudes into the crankcase at a distance of 0.05 plus or minus 0.02 inch from the crankshaft.
      • A crankshaft adjusting tool may be used to check these rings
      place the tool on the pulley extension surface and rotate the tool around the pulley.
    • If any blade touches the tool, replace the pulley.
  • Inspect the trigger wheel behind the crankshaft pulley and the sensor for damage.
  • If the engine misfires all the time or on acceleration only, test the following components:
    • Engine compression.
    • Spark plugs.
    • Spark plug wires.
    • Ignition coils test for firing voltage with a test spark plug.
    • Crankshaft sensor.
    • Fuel injectors on multiport and sequential fuel injection systems. To remove the crank sensor
  • Disconnect the wiring harness.
  • Unbolt the sensor mounting bolt.
If the crankshaft timing sensor or the camshaft reference sensor is removed, follow this procedure when the sensor is replaced:
  • Thoroughly clean the sensor tip and install a new spacer on the sensor tip. New sensors should be supplied with the spacer installed.

  • Install the sensor until the spacer lightly touches the sensor ring, and tighten the sensor mounting bolt 105 in.lb.

2007 Toyota Rav 4 ignition coil. Is the ignition coil or the ecm responsible for the firing order?


The crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor tell the ECM what to do and when the injectors/spark to occur.
