I recommend you to go to your local Autozone store and ask them to check
your vehicle for emissions and other engine problems.
This is a free service. They will show you a print out of the probable causes of the problem you are having and the cost of the parts you need to fix your vehicle.

The fuel filter is probably full of metal too. (fuel starvation) replace it.

What causes chugging?

Sounds like bad fuel, clogged/blocked fuel filter, air filter maint. of the vehicle needed (may need tune up) or internal engine problems. You have to start with the basics. How many miles, how well was the vehicle maintained etc. Cars usually don't just break with no notice.

Best to take it to autozone & have it scanned for codes. Free

Missing or chugging

If it's throwing a code, have it scanned. Sounds like the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) or the Throttle positioning sensor, (TPS) Could aslo be a dirty O2 sensor. Scanning will tell.
