Wont crank, running hot, heater blows cold air

My jeep always takes three tries for it to crank. My car suddenly started overheating, while I was stopped. I had the AC running. I added water. The next day, it seemed fine at first, then began cutting off. I put oil in it bc it was almost out of oil. That helped for a little bit. Later that day, in ran hot again. I added antifreeze. That has worked, but then my battery went dead. I got a boost and kept it running. Seemed okay for a day. Now, my jeep wont crank. It isn't a dead battery, bc it sounds like its trying to crank. It just wont. Since these problems began, I've heard a squeeling type sound coming from a belt.

You have multiple problems, but all should be easy to figure out. Three tries to crank means that your battery might just be bad. How old is the battery?

Overheating can be traced to many things. The first thing that you should do based on age is change the thermostat. it's easy to do. Make sure you use Indian head gasket shellac on both the gasket and the surfaces. It really works great. Clean those surfaces first with a scraper and emory cloth. The next thing is the water pump, again fairly easy, but it seems that you have flow. You can also have a bad electric fan, which has killed many jeeps. Idle the vehicle and while standing outside turn on the AC. if the electric fan does not start, then it is bad and needs to be replaced. This is a feature of these vehicles to prevent idle overheating, but I can promise you that without that fan , there is not enough static cooling power to handle a hot day and AC. You need that electric fan to work.

Getting back to the battery, they last only 4-5 years and then death. So change the battery out if it is in that age range. They really can't go much more than that and be reliable. Get back to me with the answers to my questions and we will go from there.

Hi Angela. it sounds like you have a belt proble causing your alternator to not charge your battery AND your water pump and fan to not cool properly. Inspect your belts first. If you have more questions please ask me!

SOURCE: oil pressure light on and wont start

Well I had the same problem and wow was I surprised man. I have a code machine that plugs into my car and tells me what wrong with it then I fix it. It read that I had a misfire #1 so that means my spark plug is dirty or something like that. When I took off the spark plug it was smashed in that was a good sign.. I called a mechanic friend of mine and he said that my head and piston were damaged but would not really know unless he took it apart. What he said was true and cost me a great deal of money..!!!! Now searching the web I have found that there many jeep liberty with the same problem just different spark plug locations so I wonder if Jeep knows of this issue but will not acknowledge it.. SOURCE: Cuts off, but will restart, then cuts off again

Likely, you have a damaged engine bearing. When there is a problem there it will turn oil pressure light on because bearings keep the pressure inside the crankshaft...It may stop as the bearing overheats and binds, then loosens up a bit allowing a re-start when it gets cooler. Battery sounding dead is likely because the engine is locking up and too difficult for starter to turn.
At this point, it is not a do-it -yourself project ...either you need a lower end rebuild or engine replacement.

An engine with a failed belt or chain generally just spins much faster than normal when cranking.
Since your engine overheated, I'd check the wires, cap and rotor to make sure all are dry. If coolant got inside the cap, it will cause cross-fire and no-start. I know of no jeep engine that uses a timing belt, even though you failed to mention which engine you have, I am sure you have a chain.(located under the front engine cover) If the engine was severely overheated it is possible to cause internal engine damage or you may have a blown head gasket...you need to determine the cause of the overheat and correct it. Your engine oil should be changed as well as auto trans oil if overheat was severe. There is an outside chance that you ran the engine out of oil. Lack of lubrication internally would give you gauge fluctuation and can also result in excessive temp from friction. BUT if that is the case, you should have heard some noise in the engine.If that has happened, your engine is not worth saving. Check items I mentioned. Hopefully it is something simple like a wet cap. Need any further help with this, just ask!!

If the serpentine belt broke, the water pump would have also stopped turning, causing coolant to stop flowing...therefore the heater would run cold. Since the belt also turns the alternator, the charging system would also stop working (alt light).
Since nothing is flowing through the engine or radiator, the engine will quickly overheat. Since your engine oil also does a bit of cooling as well as lubrication, oil passing through the overheated block will break down and overheat as well. Hopefully the light came on for that before any internal bearing damage was done. Smoke was due to the overheat.
Your serpentine belt likely is not covered under a warranty, especially after four years.
Hopefully the problem is isolated to just the belt but I do recommend that if you have an automatic transmission you change the fluid in that even if you are not at the change interval recommended. Trans oil is cooled by the cooling system and a severe overheat can chemically change it. Doing a change now will avoid any overheat related trans failure. Since you can't remove all the trans fluid (at best during a change you only remove half) so I recommend using a bottle of lucas trans additive to bolster the remaining fluid.

Heat problem. Heater only works sometimes. Blows out almost AC temperature majority of the time. No engine overheating problems. May or may not be related to actuator issue (vent always open)


Check to see if your heating system is properly filled. Air in system can often prevent the proper flow of hot coolant into the radiator core resulting in your issue.

2005 chevy impala overheat light comes on, the car was shaking when I started it and cold air when idling but when given a little gas the car starts blowing out hot air what do you think it might be?

1992 Jeep Wrangler heater not blowing hot air


How often has the coolant been changed? My only guess is that it hasn't and the hoses and the heater core are plugged up with goo and a flush is needed
