Question about 2004 Dodge Ram 1500

1 Answer

2004 dodge 1500 5.7l hard to start, running rich

5.7l engine that is hard to start. have to flood the engine to get it to start then it burns a lot of gas when started. It has random misfires. Relplaced the fuel prusure relay that was pushing 80PSI and think I may have a leak somewhere in the fuel system. May be in the return line of fuel pump. Have replaced all sensors but the throtle body/throtle possitioning unit and fuel injectors and fuel pump. Don't see or smell any other issues with fuel line.

SOURCE: engine misfiring/fuel coming out exhaust

Sounds like you may need to inspect and replace your fuel line from front to rear. no other reason for your problem.

You should definitely replace the fuel filter though this probably won't fix your hesitation. It wouldn't hurt to replace the spark plugs this is usually the culprit on these engine. I have the same engine in a '99 caravan and found the for some reason the spark plugs on cylinder 3 and 4 loosen up after one year and cause a misfire between 45 and 50 mph under load (when mildly accelerating).

turn the key to the on position a see if you can here a buzzing sound around the fuel tank,if you don't hear a sound then. (be very careful while doing this) with the key off take a fuel line coming from the tank loose, make sure its pointed away from you and turn the key to the on position, see if any gas comes out,if not then your fuel pump is probably bad.

The "wait to start" light is your glow plugs. You must have a loose connection to them or something not connecting. They come on almost everytime you start them, hot or cold.

I HAVE A READING OF PO300 AND PO420 WHAT COULD BE WRONG IT IS HARD TO CRANK UNLESS YOU PUMP THE GAS BUT WON*T IDLE SITTING IN A DRIVE THROUGH.

the p0300 is a random misfire, the p0420 indicates a bad catalytic convertor if it is plugged up it will be hard to start and have no power, it will also use a lot of fuel

What causes CEL to flash for 1/2 mile and then go off and then not start at all after rain but start when dry?

The check engine light flashes when there is a catalytic convert damaging advent happening , like for a sever misfire . When a vehicle has a misfire problem no combustion happens in that cylinder dumping raw fuel into the catalytic convert , were it burns causing the substrate to melt . To buy a new converter could cost up to a $1,000.00 bucks ! You don't say what make ,model an year vehicle you have , so I can't say what could be wrong ! Plug wires , coil's , distributor cap if yours has one . If you have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes , You probably have a P0300 random misfire or a P0301 - to P0308 depending on the number of cylinders Check Engine Light On

02 dodge strauts, smoke coming from tail pipe

what kind of smoke by that I mean what colour is it and when does is happen under hard acceleration, at idle, when first started, under light acceleration, idling a long time? blue smoke is burning oil, white smoke is burning coolant sometimes accompanied with a sweet smell, black smoke its running rich. those are the basics.

I STAND CORRECTED, TO RICH AND TO ANSWER YOU YES IT ACTS LIKE IT WANTS TO STALL. ALSO ERROR LITE COMES ON

the temperature sensor often causes symptoms such as this. it incorrectly tells the computer that the engine is cold and needs a rich mixture which results in black smoke and hard starts. another cause for such a condition is fuel injectors that are dribbling rather than atomizing fuel spray.

How do I fix black smoke problems from exhaust

Sounds like there is something wrong with the fuel injection on your vehicle making it burn to rich (probably one of the senors). The problems you describe sound typically like a car that's burning to rich. To help you understand a car mixes flue and oxygen and then ignites it. The mixture has to be different deepening on how cold or hot the weather is (it is the fuel injection's job to sort this). If it goes wrong and there is to much much flue and not enough oxygen the flue will not ignite very well. It will cause the problems you said. Other common issues with a engine running to rich is rough idoling, stalling all the time and being hard to start. This issue is known as flooding.

2008 Ford f150 misfiring and flooding itself out. What is wrong?

The engine is getting extra fuel from a ruptured fuel pressure regulator it is located on the fuel rail and gets manifold vacuum to operate remove small hose and if has gas in it the replace it.

Have the fuel pressure tested. If it's low from a tired, old pump, you know-new pump and new fuel filter. Low pressure also causes hard starting.

1992 toyota 22re fluids out and puts out a lot of fume out the exhast

Floods out.Multiple causes. How does it run when warmed up?Still stink?
Check injectors: Run the engine up to 3,000 RPM and turn off the key, while flooring the gas pedal. If engine still runs, the injector(s) are stuck open.
Also check for a vacuum leak-that will cause the engine to run very rich.
Also may be an open circuit in the temp sensor(computer side). The engine may think it's very cold and richen up the mixture.

Flooded 3.7 dodge dakota engine

To start any flooded engine is to allow full air into the engine while cranking. IE with a carby hold the acceleratot flat to the floor until the excess fuel is removed from the cylinders. (make sure that the choke is not stuck closed) Do not pump the pedal as this only makes the problem worse. With efi it should not flood but if you feel that it is flooding check for faulty injectors then again hold the pedal to the floor while cranking
