Never remove a battery cable while the engine is running , you could do that with a generator , a alternators rectifiers diodes will burn out in no time flat, if the battery tests ok , there is a bad connection , clean the battery posts and terminals till they are shiny clean, and make sure the other ends of the cables are tight.

This could be an issue of a bad starter. The starter can be tested but it needs to be taken off the vehicle and tested on a machine which puts a load on it to see if it is working properly. Auto Zone and Advance Auto will test the starter fr free.

SOURCE: car died, repeated clicking noise when start attempt...

The clicking is the Starter Solonoid not getting enough CCAs from the battery to start it.
While running - the alternator should be able to charge the system to 14.4V.

11 volts you are experiencing tells me your alternator is faulty.

Your dash and other items were turning off/on while driving because the voltage probably dipped below 8.4v.

Your vehicle runs off the alternator power once started. The battery is only there to get the engine spinning initially.

A backyard mechanic's way to test the alternator is to start the vehicle - then remove the positive wire on the battery (coming from the alternator).

** If the vehicle stays running - the battery is problematic - probably a dead cell - have it LOAD tested at a local parts shop for free.

** If the vehicle dies shortly after removing the + battery wire - the alternator is failing - and replacement is necessary.

SOURCE: 2004 Ford Explorer won't start after battery recharge

A FORD MACHANIC HAS TOLD ME THAT IN FACT THE KEY HAS TO BE RECODED. MY SITUATION IS EXACTLY THE SAME. HE SAID TO RECODE THE KEY I HAD TO TURN THE IGNITION TO THE RUN POSITION, THE SECURITY LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL FLASH RAPIDLY AND CONTINUE TO FLASH FOR 15 MINUTES . WITHIN FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE LIGHT STOPS FLASHING I MUST TURN OFF THE IGNITION FOR ONE SECOND AND TURN IMMEDIATLY BACK TO THE RUN POSITION FOR 15 MORE MINUTES. THE LIGHT WILL GO OFF AGAIN . WITHIN 5 MIN. I MUST TURN OFF THE IGNITION FOR ONE SECOND AND TURN BACK TU RUNNING POSITION. 15 MINUTES LATER REPEAT STEPS AGAIN AND THE KEY WILL BE REPROGRAMMED, AND STSRT THE CAR. GOOD LUCK MY CONTACT IS A FORD MASTER MECHANIC.

Before you go changing out the starter check for a burnt out fusible link going to the starter it will look like a wire but acts as a fuse and they burn in two just like a fuse. The symptoms you just describe are those of a burnt fusible link.

SOURCE: Power windows on ford explorer

The main reason for this concern, especially if the door is used quite often and/or the vehicle has higher mileage is a break in the wiring going from the drivers door to the body. If you access this area by pulling the protective rubber back, shine a flashlight on these wires and look for a break (open circuit). look for shiny spots from the open copper wire. The stress from the door opening and closing is what causes the break and often you will find more than one broken wire. It will usually be a heavier gauge wire that doesn't flex as easily. Good luck, if you need more info, please ask.

2004 ford explorer will not turn over with key but remote starter switch makes it turn over

Its a good possibility that the Anti-theft is interferring with the circuit. If you have an extra ignition key, use that in case the password chip in your regular FOB has detriorated.

There is a brake sensor which is on the upper brake pedal. It interlocks with the starter to prevent starting without having your foot on the brake pedal. Check your brake lights for operation. If the brake lights stay dark with your foot on the pedal, the switch is broke or knocked out of position. A common problem.

Next, there are small wires for the starter solenoid. You can use a test light on one removed wire and ground the test light to the vehicle, the other end in the small wire. Turn the keyswitch to start, with brake pedal pressed and see if it lights up. If it does light up, the starter solenoid may be bad.

Battery level. Ford Anti-theft and some say Battery-saver, can cause both starting and charging problems. A fully charged battery can be at 13.2V- 13.6V. When Ford systems detect low voltage it can activate the Anti-theft, battery-saver, and even disconnect the charging system to allow the battery to completely drain. In some cases the Anti-theft drops starter voltage to around 7V so the starter will not spin. Have the battery tested.

I know of 2004 trucks that were jump started and showed charging, then after 5-10 minutes they lost the charging system. Some people lost the charging system at 70MPH and drove until they stalled. All because of the automatic features built into the trucks. A new battery fixed the problem. Your problem could stem from this.

Intermittent problem starting 2002 volvo s60.

the symtoms you describe sounds like a battery fault. but if you have had the battery properley tested and is good then you either have something discharging the battery intermittantly ie. trunk light staying on or a high resistance in the main battery leads or earth connections

Battery dead this morning...just got a couple of clicks. the light and radio work. got a jump and drove it for 40 min. wont start again

More then likely a bad cell in the battery, so it won't hold a charge, jump it and go to any auto parts, they will check the battery and alternator for free, I don't think it's the alternator, due to you drove it for 40 min with no trouble, if it was the alternator, the car would have turn off on you while driving it.Most of these auto parts will also install the battery for you for free.

this is usually a sign of a bad starter when you turn the key and will not turn over but not sure why it died when stopping!

Engine will not start. Get clicking noise like a bad battery.

If lights and radio worked, LOW load off the battery is OK, but trying to start (400Amp draw) isn't. My bet is that your Battery connectors are loose. Dump a COKE slowly on eaxh to rremove all the Green crystalline stuff (do it slowwwwww) then remove (Negative (-) side first) and clean up the insides with a piece of sandpaper. Put them back on (Positive (+) first) and tighten good (these are typically LEAD, so easy to ruin)
Try again!
