Question about 1999 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

In my 1999 dodge caravan the ignition only turns the engine over after repeated attempts.

I checked all the connections on the battery and the starter and they are good. I replaced the starter and that did not fix it. The starter relay switch also seems to be working. When the ignition switch is turned, there is no sound at all....only after repeated attempts the ignition finally works and the car starts.

Have you searched for a forum online--hopefully one directly concerning your brand and model? Intermittent problem. Ignition switch? (A recurring problem with old Honda Accords. An electric module in the steering column for those.) Cheap PRC auto parts are a problem--even proving deadly. Older cars have a separate solenoid--engaging the starter--that may fail, too. I don't know about the Caravan--probably not--they're more integral to starters these days. What about your steering column wiring?

I wear out my emergency brake--always invoking after parking. Somewhere on Youtube likely is the key your solution. (Seems to be a great deal of good info on your vehicle, there--perhaps knowledgeable assistance from posters, as well.)

Youtube seems to have several videos demonstrating replacing the lock cylinder and'/or ignition switch. It's an older vehicle--seems to be a common problem.

Sounds to me like the ignition switch itself. If there is no click or absolutely nothing and after several key turns it will work then the ignition switch itself is going bad. I'm not positive if this vehicle has a security key. If it does try another key if have more than 1 for the vehicle or get a replacement key. The ignition switch will either need replaced or could be the switch no longer able to read the security key if it has one.

Just replaced the ignition switch and this did not fix the problem, in fact now no matter how many attempts are made to start the van, it does not turn sound what so ever. I would appreciate any thoughts on how to proceed.

  • jlj4evr Apr 29, 2014

sorry that didnt work. but at same time means that this vehicle must be equipped with a security system. The new switch isnt being acknowledged by the system. If you used a universal switch then you need to swap for one specific to your vehicle. The problem is definitely limited to the ignition system itself. either switch security system or wiring between there to the starter. Contact a dealerand tbey should be willing to tell you if using an aftermarket switch will cause the issue. If they say no then the issue has to be with the wiring starter relay or ecm(computer)or back to the starter. Do all the lights come on when key is turned forward? And if so is there a security light and does it flash when try to start?

I just got off the phone with dealer and they told me there is not a security system with this car...however there is a red flashing light on the instrument panel. I don't remember this before. The dealer said that an after market ignition switch could be used. The dealer recommended that we take the ignition switch out and replace it with another because it may be bad. Do you have anymore thoughts? I appreciate your help on this.

  • jlj4evr Apr 29, 2014

That could be an aftermarket system then and there would be your issue. Call them back and see what they say when you tell them about the light. If it is an aftermarket system your going to have to find the unit and either eliminate it or fix it. Could be worth it to try another switch. But makes sense now. when you lost battery power the aftermarket alarm that has probably been long disarmed re-armef itself. Most aftermarket systems come with a button they install usually somewhere under the dashboard below the steering wheel. Its usually tiny so not easy to spot. you have to turn the key forward then press the button to reset the alrm. May have to do every time you start the vehicle. I had one on a blazer that after a few times of using the button to reset alarm it would shut itself back off so didnt need to keep using the button.

The red light that is blinking is on the baste of the instrument looks like it may be on the steering column but after looking closer it is actually on the base of the instrument panel and is located near the "trip/reset" buttons.

  • jlj4evr Apr 29, 2014

Usually all alarm systems they install the tiny light. Its made to let thiefs know there is an alarm before they attempt to break in. Is it constantly flashing or only when the key is turned forward?

There's only 2 more things that I can think of, check the fuse for the ignition, then the computor itself, you did everything else.It might be the problem and may not.

SOURCE: 1992 Dodge Grand Caravan engine failure

There is not fuse for pump but a relay in the relay block. I do suggest jumping to see if pump turns on. Test voltage from ECM if needed. If voltage is to pump, then pump is shot. If not voltage, relay may be bad

How to reprogram the car starter after changing car battery for my 1999 Dodge Grand caravan?

Never heard of reprograming a car starter.
Need to know the symton of what is happening??
Like--- when you turn the key in postion when the gauges and warning lights come on--ignition on-- do they light up? Or no?If no --check the battery connections again --some wire did not get hooked up or broke.
Or when you turn the key all the way to start up the engine ---nothing happens??No, again check battery conections.
Or you may have shorted something out when disconnecting / installing the battery and thus blew one of the main fuses.
I do not know where they are offhand but if you have a owners manual it should tell you where they are.
Good Luck..

Starter relay clicks, engine does not start

Your problem may be a ignition switch.  This part is inside the steering column.  Your ignition key/tumbler turns this piece to start the vehicle.  I see a lot of these that go bad.  Some are easy and some aren't.  Your Chilton should tell you how to change them.

Low voltage to the starter not enough power to the starter it could be the battery. So get tested at some auto shop or those auto zone.
