Question about 1987 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

Erractic timing I had my 318 engin rebuilt, also new coil, cardone dist, ecu module plug wires. The carb.rebuilt ,I removed the idle screws and lost them so I found a two on summit that came close to the original ones, now I tried adjusting the idle screws and now there bottom out. The rpm stays at 700 rpms, and engine runs smooth, but the timing is erractic, could it be that I set the light wrong, its a actron from harbor freight. When I have set up on the light face it has one arrow up and one down did not used these the book says adjust to zero first, could this have given me erractic timing.Ijust shined the light on the marks and they where jumping from 12 btc and 12 aft too dead center, I'am also looking for magnetic timing probe that are used on old dodge engines it has a small tube that it fits inside, Ilike to find one,but don't know where , what is BTW inc.someone wrote this company but does't tell me enough where.RON

Did you check the plug wires are in the correct position ,and with the distributor if they are misplaced it 'll sound like erratic timing harbor tools have worked for me.

1987 Samurai idles fine. Above idle goes lean, runs rough, mc dwell 0. Rebuilt carb., no change. replaced with rebuilt carb., no change. Timing bounced around when engine running bad, replaced dist....

87 has no ECU. so must be an engine swap to a 89 or newer tracker
or last sammi that did have EFI.
you said EFI and Carb in same paragraph and that is a contradiction.
post to my bbs for more help.

post a link to a photo of your engine, many sammy cars have a newer engine and EFI added. no matter we can fix it, but you need to learn whats under the hood first, photos rule in this word.

Ran fine to friends house has not started since. replaced plugs, wires, coil, getting fuel, fire to and from coil, i am lost

If this one is with a Carb. then sometimes the idling jet washer gets loose after getting worn out or compressed and with vibrations the jet rotates and looses its ideal place. Check for jet on lower side next to throttle wire under the air filter housing. Tighten the same fully and loosen 2 threads. If the thing starts, replace the ring washer which can normally be bought from the dealer with carb. kit.

Not getting fire to plug wires. I have replaced coil pack, module, dist pickup, and cap. I have tested and have fire to dist but nothing coming out. This is an 86 2.8 comanche 4x4 w/ 4 barrel Holley carb...

You have spark on the coil wire but not coming from the cap. You replaced the cap right. Did you replace the rotor too. Sometimes the rotor burn in the center and the spark goes right thru it in to the distributor shaft.

I am trying to start my 1980 gm 350 in my boat. engine will turn and have new fuel and filters. Pulled off coil wire and got spark, grounded a spark plug to the manifold and got spark. What could it be?...

definitely a fuel issue. be sure to check that the distributor isnt 180 degrees off. you say it'll start when you pour some fuel into the carb, it sounds like you arent getting enough fuel then. try adjusting the float level higher so that more fuel will be pumped through. and how old is the carb? has it been rebuilt recently? make sure the jets are clean and adjusted properly. make sure none of the mixture screws are bottomed out. it sounds like it's all the quadrajet's fault on this one!

1990 K5 Blazer DIED(Electrical?)?

There may be no injector pulse if the computor does not see a RPM signal.
There will be no spark if the ignition module does not see a dist pulse from the dist pickup.......a RPM signal.
Because you do not have both ......I would suggest to check/change the dist pick up.
Follow the wires from the ignition module inside the dist to the pickup which is also inside the dist.
If it is just a bad dist pickup....keep all your old parts as good spares.
Also...is the dist turning? to provide a RPM signal?
You will have to remove the dist to change the pick-up.....mark your timing locations......"rotor position" and "dist body location"before removal.
A quick test before installing the "repaired dist" .....plug it in the the truck wiring and turn on the key....DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR DIST ROTOR CORRECT POSITION......as you spin the dist by hand .....the injectors should spray.
