Question about 2001 Ford Expedition
Drives great the reverse does not work, however when you put the gear shift into park, drive, etc it does not line up. Is this a transmission problem, or something simpler?
It sounds like a gear shift alignment switch/linkage...Try your mechanic before a transmission shop. Should be less costly, and only address the alignment of the selector.

SOURCE: 1999 f150 2wd transmission clunk
You can usually tell by grabbing the driveshaft & turning it by hand back & forth & push up & down, side to side looking for play in the joint.

I would check the shifter and the linkage. Even though the shifter lever is moving, that doesn't mean it's moving the linkage on the transmission.

DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires

No gears at all is not a good sign. About the only things that can cause all the gears to go out at the same time is either the transmission has a severe fluid leak and there is no fluid left to engage the clutches or you have something broken like an input shaft.
If your truck is a 4X4 make sure there is not something silly like the transfer case being in neutral.
Otherwise, check your fluid level. If it is really low, then you need to find out why. If it is not low, look at the color of the fluid and smell the fluid. Good fluid should be pink or red. Bad fluid will be dark brown and will have a burnt smell to it.
If the fluid looks and smells bad, then it is probably time for a transmission overhaul.
