SOURCE: steers hard when turning around

try lucas power steering stop-leak. drain some of the fuild and then pour that in. it is for surging rack & pinions, not just for leaks. if that doesn't work then you may have a defective rebuilt rack.
check power steering pump pressure, might be weak.

SOURCE: I had a new rack

Seems to me the steering wheel was not aligned to the central position when the new rack was installed. This may be a job that needs to be rectified by the installer. If the steering is sloppy thisoo may need to be looked at by the installer.

How to Diagnose an Alignment Problem?

tire wear is a method of diagnosing an alignment problem
abnormal wear on the insides or out sides of the tread indicates a problem with toe in/out and or camber settings
wheel wobble at speed ( 20 mph up ) indicates castor setting problems
steering wheel not self centering after turns indicates castor settings
steering wandering on the road indicates worn steering /ball joints and or alignment settings out
car running sideways ( crabbing)on the road indicates worn rear suspension parts , broken center bolts on leaf springs ,and rear alignment problems which will affect front end alignment
this is indicated by the steering wheel position off center when driving straight ahead

Hi, My Versa wanders at speeds over 70mph. Probably electric steering. How can I make it more stabile on the highway? The car did it since new. It has been checked for everything that could go wrong.

have an inspection done on the steering and front end suspension
loose /worn ball joints steering end joints , wheel alignment and faulty tyres will give you this indication
The power steering pump does nothing more that provide pressure into the steering box/rack to assist with the steering
it may be that the steering is to sensitive at speed and most systems compensate by having less power assist at speed
take it to a steering specialist accredited shop as the control valves may need replacing or adjusting

Why doesn't steering return to center?

Hi Paul, How is the condition of your front tires? If the pump is whining at higher rpms that will change pressure down at the rack, is the rack a variable assist? My advise would be to get the pump replaced or rebuilt asap, If the pump is whiny or grinding it will send small metal particles through the system and contaminate the rack and pinon etc. Did you flush the system when you replaced the rack? Let me know a little more info, Hope this helps, Good Luck Randy.

I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

check for loose tie rod ends. Check for loose suspension ball joints and rubbers . Have a wheel alignment done . Check bearing adjustment.. If it is a 4 wheel drive check the condition of the steering shock absorber as they wear out and do not help in the steering control.

How to install stering rack 04 dodge ram 1500

before connecting up the tie rod ends
turn the wheel to one full lock now turn it to the opposite lock counting the revolutions that the wheel does
now turn it back half way that puts the rack in the middle of the pinion
now place both wheels straight ahead
adjust the rod ends until the slip into the steering arms
tighten up the nuts
now take it in for a wheel alignment

I have trouble steering...the truck wanders over the road...i have replaced idler arms, pitman arm, center link, shocks, brakes, new tires, front end alignment, bearings...the right front tire sits...

when the steering wheel is centred, the front wheels should both point slightly inwards.
after the amount of parts changed, i would recommend that you get the tracking checked at a garage using the proper, calibrated measuring systems, to make sure that the steering is set up properly and safely.

Sound like you may need a new power steering pump or rack and pinion. Have you noticed any leaks from the vehicle? If you've had the vehicle for 21yrs, then I would have to go with the power steering pump is begining to fail. Hope this helps.

Wandering is usually caused by toe-out. Did the aligner use front wheel drive specifications for this rear wheel drive truck? A front wheel drive toes in when the wheels are pulling the car, but the front wheels on your truck drag back to a toe-out position if steering parts are worn. Try pushing the fronts of the front wheels apart. They should still be at least a 16th of an inch closer in the front than in the rear of the tires.
