SOURCE: gearshifter wont shift into park

If I could get just a little more info here I can see what I can help with I need the make and model along with the year please.
In the mean time, Check to see if stop lights are working Shift interlock and stoplight circuit are common issues. Check fuses, Check alignment of interlock switch at top of brake pedal Try turning key to 1st position (unlock) shift to neutral to start and then shift into park, lets see if that helps. Other wise you could have a linkage issue, as well as ignition switch.

2003 Chevrolet Cavalier automatic won't shift to park and reverse its stuck on neutral and drive

I think it is linked to the Starter Interlock system and probably a switch on the Brake pedal lever under the dash.

There is suppose to be a safety system(check brake lights) which prevents starting the car without a foot on the Brake or without the car in Park.

Some makers may allow starting in Neutral like the old days; but the intention of the system was to prevent runaway cars from moving when the Gearshift lied about being in Park.

I know that the system had to be adjusted "referred to as timed" so that the shift linkage, Brake pedal switch and sometimes Ignition switch had to be in the right place for everything to work.

Reading your problem it is evident that part of the system was crippled for some time, and finally fell apart on you.

Possibly your shifter indicates D when it is in another gear and that the linkage is binding and preventing the correct selection of gears.

You could securely jack a rear wheel off the ground and disconnect the trans linkage. Have an assistant operate the gearshift and see if it makes sense and if it is binding. If the shifter seems okay, your only choice is to try to operate the shift lever sticking out of the trans. Engine OFF. To see if valve body in trans is rough.

Alternative is to tow it to a Repair shop for diagnosis. Notice I did not say Trans shop. You don't know if you need a Trans shop yet. So taking it somewhere where they do not install Transmissions will go further in getting only what is necessary fixed.

Please rate my info, I hope it helps.

How can i get it to shift to neutral

You need to post what make of vehicle this is and whether it is an Automatic or stick shift.

In general, the brake pedal must be pressed for an Automatic to be shifted away from Park. In most stick shifts, the neutral is available after pressing in on the clutch.

For Automatics requiring the pressing of the brake pedal, an interlock switch is on the brake pedal lever under the dash. The switch can be knocked out of place by feet or even broken by the drivers feet striking it.

The idea is for the gearshift and brake pedal to be "interlocked" so the brakes are applied before the gearshift can be moved. This requires the shift linkage to be adjusted or "timed" to line up for the electric signal produced by the brake pedal switch. There is also a similar system to prevent the starter from working when the gears are not in Park or neutral.

In the case of a car like a Corvette, you would push down on the stick shift before the trans will engage neutral. This was made so you would not be able to over rev the engine by missing a gear.

I hope that one of my solutions works for your unknown vehicle.

Mazda b400 stuck in park, we have brake lights on flat ground now and rocking truck, pressing on brake and turning wheels dont help

Okay, look under the dash. At the top of the brake pedal lever there should be a switch. This switch should Interlock with the starter and the gearshift. It can be knocked out of time or broken by feet hitting it. It is suppose to allow for a locking tab to retract so the gearshift moves.

Your shift mechanism may be jammed under the vehicle. If the wheels turn then the column should be unlocked. You will either need a helper to move the gearshift(while the engine is off, wheels blocked) and try to feel the shift mechanism to see if it wants to move at the transmission.
You may want to disconnect the cable at the transmission and see if the cable will then function normally.

If the cable functions normally, then the Parking pawl is jammed or broken inside the trans. It will need to be towed and the transmission opened up.

If the cable does not move, the shifter may have come apart inside the cabin.

Gearshift in truck is not shifting the transmission, everything inside steering column looks ok, yet no movement on linkage under the truck 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500 4WD 5.3liter

You'll need to try and narrow it down. You can undo the shifter cable from the gear shifter and from the trans it's self. See if it moves freely. Check to see if the lever on the side of the trans moves also, it will have more resistance(be sure to block the wheels and set the parking break). Also check movement for the gear shifter it's self.
Report back with which one is bound up, so we can further asisst you!
