What was the other prob?
If the box actually fitted together easily ( not forced) and the gears all worked before i have to assume the linkages are fitted wrong or need adjusting?

Testimonial: "First of all thank you for your support, I really appreciate it. In fact, where i am living we cannot find the expert to repair the car. The initial problem was that oil gage was not passing through after the removal. Because of this, they dismantle the engine to fix the oil gages. Now after reconnecting the engine, the car can start, going to revers or gear one and that is all. Today one of the mechanics told me that it may need reprograming. reagrds, khalil"

GEAR SELECTOR REDUCED FUCTION message has consistently been showing on my 2001 Volvo s80 2.9 message screen. Recently I noticed that the gear began to malfunction. Occasionally the gear will refuse to

I'm guessing that your GearTronic function (the 'manual' mode) isn't working, nor is the Winter mode working (starting in 2nd or 3rd gear).

The gear selector module under the shifter is most likely the culprit, but using VIDA/DiCE (the Volvo car/computer interface) will tell you more. A local Volvo shop or dealer will have that.
I'm not sure if they're coded to the car, or if you can snag one cheaply from the junkyard from a similar year car and swap them..?!

I'd try disconnecting the battery for an hour first. Turn off the ignition, LEAVE THE CAR ALONE FOR 15 MINUTES and then disconnect the NEGATIVE battery post for 30 minutes.

When you connect the battery again, make sure you FIRST turn the ignition to position II - ignition on. Connect the cable, then turn off the ignition.

It might resolve a temporary problem, or the issue comes back, but at least you know it wasn't something really simple.

I think you have an engine speed sensor fault. its not reading the engine speed or the motion speed. needs these two to change speed and ( gear). one is connected to the abs unit and the other is on the engine. usually if they both go its down to the gear box ecu. you can check if you have it on a ecu reader. will have fault codes or not be read at all.

1999 Chevy Silverado...does park fine but won't change into other gears easily. sometimes it takes a half hr of ramming to get it to grab into drive or other gears. At the moment not sure what gear it is...

Good Afternoon, your problem sounds like a common one that I run across often in the full size trucks with a little age if your description is correct. What it sounds like is that your shift-lock solenoid is not functioning properly. Under your steering column is a little black box with a rod going into it, and when it first started it did not take too long for it to finally go in gear and now has progressively got worse. For troubleshooting purposes disconnect the solenoid from the column by just popping it off the side and see if you can shift easier. That will eliminate that problem and all you have to do is simply replace that solenoid. Any other questions please feel free to ask, and I hope that helped your situation.

My car is a manual transmission. But when i use the 4th gear, it automatically comes to nutral gear, whats the problem?

if its jumping out of fourth back into nuetral then you have 2 options, both involve taking out the gearbox.
1/replace the baulk ring on fourth gear or
2/ get a recon box(poss the easiest,as all rings/bearings will have been replaced).

Alfa's have a Nylon ball with the gear selector (under the gearbox). They wear pretty easily. This could be pretty worn, either that or you're running low on gearbox, or "selespeed" oil. Check them out. They're pretty important and can cause serious problems to the gear box if not looked after.
