Can you take it out of gear when it's not running? If not then something is bent or in the way of it's travel or the shifter cable came off it's link or is frayed, probably near the shift stick. If it's a hydraulic system with a Master and Slave try bleeding the system at the transmission end there should be a fitting on the Slave cylinder which attaches near the shift fork. If its a ford car, check that that the transmission pan isn't damaged which would cause this problem.
If this is a chev car then check the ERLS fuse. See my other posts for more info on that.
