SOURCE: Can't get to the spark plugs in a 2003 Ford Taurus

I am assuming you have the 3.0L Duratec engine. Although the job seems daunting, it's actually easy to remove the upper half of the intake manifold plenum. This took me about 40 minutes to remove the first time I did it, and leaves the rear three spark plugs wide open.

A good repair manual such as the Chilton's manual for the 1996-2005 Ford Taurus has the step-by-step. You should get a new set of intake plenum seals (from Ford or most auto parts stores, which may have to special order them) along with the spark plugs. The seals are a set oval rings made of silicone rubber. Yours may not need them but if you damage one getting the plenum off, or if they have shrunk with age, you'll be glad you got them. They're about $16 a set.

SOURCE: I am not sure what is the best way to change out

First off, if you're attempting this, I'm assuming you're someone mechanically inclined or at least somewhat of a grease monkey - smile.gif
NO NEED for me to tell you how to change the first THREE spark plugs that stare at you when you pop-up your hood - These should be child play for you... if not, take your car to a shop and stop reading... (no offense)... smile.gif

The back ones are the fun ones to get to!

Keep in mind you will need to move a lot of the wire harnesses around - you may have to cut a few tie-down clips or zip-ties to help you out.

1 - Remove the Air Box - Remove Air Filter - No need to dismantle the whole Unit into pieces... Loosen up the clip clamp at the Throttle Body and pull out the whole Unit -

** Disconnect the Sensors, Disconnect the Front Rubber Hose and the little valve underneath **

2 - Loosen and remove the screws that hold down the manifold (6 total I think in the front) - There is a super long one all by itself in the middle - the others are at the edges

** Also, take your time to detach the Wire Harness/Hoses strapped to the Manifold (in the front) you can do this by removing the black electrical tape and replacing later when you're done ...

3 - There is one screw under the Throttle Body - remove it - it's kinda' hidden but you'll see it.

4 - There is another one on top of the manifold towards the back - it's hidden under the hood cowl

** Look on top of your engine towards the back - Locate two rubber hoses attached to the manifold - FYI - You will be working in a very TIGHT spot, but be patient and make sure you don't give up! **

5 - Loosen/Detach Rubber Hose on the Left (Pass Side) attached to the Manifold (PCV Valve?) - Make sure you don't drop it - it connects the manifold to the Engine - it's a small "L-shaped" hose

** There is a tiny connector right below that valve, you cannot see it but you can feel it, it's easy to remove, just unplug it - AGAIN, it's a tight spot, but not impossible to work with. **

6 - Loosen/Detach another Rubber Hose on the Right (Driver Side) and your manifold is ready to come off - Move it around, and pull it out... careful with the wire harnesses around and the other hoses that are sitting on top of the engine.

Make sure you Disconnect the Mass Air Flow Sensor and Air Temperature Sensors!!!

Once you pull out the Manifold - it is easy as cakes to replace your three other Spark Plugs -

Follow the steps backwards and VOILA! - It is a LOT easier to do then all this jargon I've written

Ford taurus X SEL VSS location

the vss is located at the output shaft of the trans. it produces a signal measured in mV. often, on taurus platform vehicles, it is necessary to remove the exhaust from the engine and lower it. then a simple mV reading can be taken as per the pinpoint test. some signals can be found making higher frequency noise so the system continues to function but in limited strategy. the resulting runability problems should indicate to the owner that it needs to be taken in for repairs. continuing to operate in limited strategy often leads to fouled spark plugs and an eventual no start. since all this is often preceeded by a "service engine soon" light, or other amber MIL lamp in the instrument cluster, the car is indicating you must get the codes read. the testers technicians use can also deliver live datastream info and picture during operation. they use this data to find the sensors or actuators which are out of range, out of spec or causing a hard fault. if you decide to replace it, give notice to the plugs as maintenance. clear the memory and complete a full drive cycle before retest for a clear future of operation

If it's just for maintenance and not a specific failure you would change the spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, maybe have an upper intake cleaning too.

No spark to engine 1991 ford pickup

It can be faulty or dirty spark plug itselfd. Also for reference get the fuel level checked. Is the fuel tank is empty or near to empty.
Try cleaning the spark plugs and then see if that is helpin. On some cases the black carbon layer gets collected on the spark plugs and that causes the problem,so cleaning the plugs help. But if its not helping, then spark plug has to be replaced.Spark plugs get power from ignition coil to ignite sparks. If ignitioncoils are faulty then also there will no spark.--------------
