You can but you have to know the check eng light flashes. it can get confusing fast. But you can go to a parts store and get it scanned for free. Autozone can scan it and give you a print out of what codes are wrong.

You will need a scanner. There is one available on Ebay and elsewhere for 5 to 10.00 called the ELM327, it is a Blue-tooth device for Bluetooth equipped laptops and/or Android phones.
If this isn't quick enough try to find a local back-yard mechanic that will scan it for you for 10 or 20 bucks rather than 80.00+ at a dealer or garage.
Keep in mind that this only is a symptom and may not be the problem but may be a wire or vacuum leak in the general vicinity of it. One could test each sensor as it should have a certain resistance value between the posts of each sensor. Not sure where you can find the specs however.
My guess is that either the crank sensor or the EGR system is clogged or not functioning. Most EGR valves can be removed and cleaned and freed from sticking but a lot of problems exist where the channel the EGR takes through the intake manifold gets clogged and typically must be removed to get the carbon out.
Check out the videos on that are related to this problem and for testing, eg., one can make a gasket out of a pop can to cover the hole in the egr for a test, which blocks the hole completely - temporarily.
One final option is that you have bad plugs and wires.
A compression test would tell you if you have a bad valve, rings or perhaps bad head gasket. In a second test of compression one could put a bottle cap full of oil in the cylinder and if the compression goes up it is the rings that are bad.

SOURCE: Front Driver Side Door Panel

look for any screws near the door handle might be kind of hidden or covered by a removable plastic cover . also start at the bottom corner with a good flat blade screw driver and pry the clips loose starting on bottom corner and across then up .. if all screws are out near door handle you should be able to lift up on the door panel and remove it unless there is a screw in say the window crank if its manuel. electric windows and door locks has a plugin in back you can unplug also to take the whole thing off. thanks Jerry holler if you need more.

I just got the code for my radio by calling 1-800-537-5140 and choosing the option for my vehicle make. 1 for chevrolet. then i entered 106010 for the customer # and then entered my serial # from the stereo and it gave me a lock code for free. Now i am just trying to figure out how to enter it since my manual tells me to take it to the dealership. Now that you have your 4 to 6 digit code, you can enter it by following the these steps. 1. Make sure your ignition is in the "on" position, but no started. 2. Press/Hold the "HR" button to set the first 2 or 3 numbers. 3. Press/Hold the "Min" button to set the next 2/3 numbers. 4. Press the AM/FM button one time. "SEC" should be displayed. You can now turn the radio on. Good luck!

97 malibu with a 3100 engine - it dies if you let off the gas - so it won't idle - but runs fine as long as you are giving it gas

idle air control motor is most likely not working . sometimes you can clean them out with intake cleaner spray or you may need to replace it . also look for vacuum leaks . another possible problem is a egr valve stuck open .i would think the engine light would have come on if that was the case for the egr valve

How do i reset the computer

Reset computer to clear trouble code? If this is the case and you don't have a OBD II scanner, disconnect the ground cable for about 15 min. this will clear the trouble codes. Good Luck.

Suzuki esteem 2000 1.8l wagon. Check engine light on. Trouble accelarating in rainy weather. Any ideas? also how could i check the trouble code myself without obd device? Cheers!

Sounds like the moisture or the wetness from the rain is getting within the firing area. Try using Di-electric grease on the plug boots and coil pack. This prevents wetness from entering the firing area and causing diffused spark. If you have an Advance auto or Auto zone near you, they will usually check the code for you for free.

My 1997 Chevy Malibu is getting a misfire code. Any solutions to my problem will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

a miss fire is usually caused by a bad spark plug, wires, or coil not producing enough voltage.

My check engine light came on and it was when i was going up a a hill and in feel like to skiping or miss fireing.

I don't know where you live, but some auto part stores can put a code scanner on it to find out why the light is on. I autozone does.
