you must RUN the scanner/computer for easy diagnostic, and fix it.
Remember the electronic vehicle is very complicated, You can have some faulty: PCM+ignition coil+BCM+sensor+etc.
see the diagram attached.

I installed new starter and the starter keeps running when i hook up the battery.

The hot wire running from the battery to the starter could be touching the solenoid causing the starter to engage. Make sure it is propertly attached.

The 1996 jeep cherokee sport has been running fine. The last couple of days if I start it and drive for a bit turn it off and then come back out to start it...it wont start....I leave it for a bit and then...

This is a common symptom called heat soak. The heat from the exhaust system is so overwhelming on the internals of the starter, that it creates infinite electrical resistance inside the starter solenoid, basically killing it until it cools down.

You have two options. You can replace the starter, or you can wrap your starter with "Header Wrap" to help prevent this problem.

Where can i find the starter on a nissan frontier 2004

The starter on the Nissan Frontier is a motor that is connected to the battery that runs the ignition process of the truck. When you turn the key to start the truck, this will send an electrical signal to the starter motor that turns the flywheel. The flywheel in turns moves the crankshaft. When the starter goes bad or teeth on the starter gear get chipped this will prevent the truck from starting. Locating the starter is the first step in replacing it.
  • Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Locate the battery to the passenger side of the engine compartment.
  • Identify the positive terminal of the battery. This will be indicated by the (+) symbol above the terminal.
  • Trace the red cable that is attached to the positive terminal. The cable will run from the battery down to the side of the motor.
  • Locate the end of the red cable as it is attached to the starter. The starter will be attached to a bracket by the motor with the back of the starter connected to the bell housing of the transmission.
  • Remove the front passenger side tire for easier access to the starter. This will also give you plenty of room to remove the starter.
I hope this helps.

Good luck.

Where is the starter locate on the 1995 lexus es 300 and how do you replace it

I have attached a diagram below also. You will need to climb underneath the engine and disconnect the batter cable line running to the starter and the ignition line. Then take out the starter mounting bolts, and drop the starter down and there might be a starter shim with it. Once it is out put your new one in place including the starter shim and re-insert and tighten the starter mounting bolts. Then remember to re-attach the battery and ignition line to the selenoid. Now start the car, If you hear the starter wind but not turn the car over you may need to install another shim. Well i hope this has helped you. dfeecb8.jpg

On 4WD Dakota models with the V6 engine, the starter is removed from above. On these models you will have to disconnect the steering gear and position the shaft out of the way to gain working clearance.
  1. Remove the starter attachment bolts and withdraw the starter from the engine flywheel housing. On some models with automatic transmissions, the oil cooler tube bracket will interfere with the starter removal. In this case, remove the starter attachment bolts, slide the cooler tube bracket off the stud, and then withdraw the starter.

To install:

  1. Be sure that the starter and flywheel housing mating surfaces are free of dirt and oil to make a good electrical contact.

Fig. 20: Install the starter motor on the 4WD Dakota from above as shown
  1. Slide the starter in place, secure using the bolts and washers removed. Tighten the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). Connect wires and battery cable end at the starter.
  2. If removed for clearance, reconnect the steering column shaft.
  3. Secure the oil cooler bracket if equipped. Connect the negative battery cable on the battery.
When tightening the mounting bolt and nut on the starter, hold the starter away from the engine for the correct alignment.

Diesel Engines

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the truck and support it safely on jackstands.
  3. Disconnect and label the wires at the starter motor.
  4. Remove the attaching bolt, nut and washer, then lift the starter and solenoid assembly from the engine.
To install:
  1. Before installing the starter motor, be sure the mounting surface on the drive end housing and the flywheel housing are clean, to ensure good electrical contact.
  2. When tightening the attaching bolt and nut, hold the starter away from the engine to ensure the proper alignment. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  3. Attach the wiring at the starter. Tighten the solenoid connection to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Tighten the battery cable at the starter motor to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
  4. Attach the negative battery cable.
SOLENOID REPLACEMENT
Chrysler Corp. for 1989-91 models did provide replaceable solenoids for the starter motors covered by this information. However since 1992, the manufacturer no longer recommends replacement of individual components, even if the later unit has the same part number of a formerly serviceable unit. Chrysler now simply calls for replacement of the entire starter assembly if the solenoid is found faulty.

Sterter will not engage when clutch is depressed

The bendix on your starter is bad, you need to replace the starter. That's a fuel injected car so if you had a voltage problem, you wouldn't be able to push start it. Replacing the starter should keep you from having to Flinstone the car.

How do I install a new starter in a 93 Dodge Ram van B-250 8 cyl.

Park van so that you can safely access the starter. I use ramps under front wheels and put it in park and set the parking brakes. Disconnect positive battery cable at battery, disconnect starter battery cable and ignition wires from starter solenoid (remember terminal locations as these will attach to new starter solenoid). Remove old starter. Replace with new starter. Re-attach wiring in reverse order.
