96 Miata was on trickle charger during winter so wanted to start several times (on/off) so oil would get to upper end & not starting dry. I started then off then on again & heard a loud bang like gun or backfire. 3 battery cell covers were blown out & acid sprayed around trunk. The 80a fuse is now welded into the holder & car won't start. Funny that the fuse link is not open. Tried pulling fuse with pliers but just breaking plastic of fuse which won't even wiggle. How do you get the fuse out & what is next thing to check? Thanks. PEL
Pel, the 80 amp main is bolted into the fuse block. Disconnect battery, metric 10 socket removes the block by the 2 bolts on the engine side, same size bolts on both side of the block, remove them both have ring connectors, be sure to reconnect them when putting back together. I did this same thing last monday during a hail and rain storm.

Batteries can have a dead cell in them, meaning there is sufficient charge to run accessories and the "check glass" may look fine (dark green in color on maintenance free batteries), but one dead cell in the battery indicates replacement time.

connect +pole of your jumper battery to +pole of your discharged batter and -pole to negative pole. after starting, remove the jumper cables immediately.
