Question about 2004 Volvo S40

2004 Vovlo S40 stuck in park

Car is stuck in park. cannot move into another gear. Does anyone know if the is an emergency procedure to make the Volvo 2004.5 S40 automatic move out of the park position?

    I don't think the 2004.5 S40 has a push button for the override. The only thing I see is a plastic approx 1/4 " piece that I can pop open. Once open it looks like a hole. Am I supposed to have a tool to insert?

    Are you looking at the 2004.5 manual. My understanding is that were major changes from the 2004 and this model is an early release of the 2005 version. I know that I should have the manual with me and I do not. So I appreciate your feedback.

Push the shift-lock button and hold it down while taking it out of park.

    this is from the owners manual for overiding park lock



    Turn the starting (ignition) key to position I
    · Press firmly on the “SHIFTLOCK OVERRIDE” button located at the base of the gear selector
    · While holding the override button down, press the button on the front of the gear selector
    · Move the selector from the (P)ark position.

Hi!

First of all please check the Gear Shift Liver Lock System. Then you need to check Brake Padel Switch because you can move gear shifter by pressing brake padel if your brake Padel switch defect stuck in any position. There are a couple of other things that can cause this. There is an interlock solenoid that receives power when the brake pedal is depressed. This solenoid rarely fails. Typically the problem is with the brake light switch.

That being said, the most common cause of the problem you're experiencing is the ignition switch interlock sticking. The interlock is on the left side of the shifter housing and has a cable going up to the ignition switch. This is what will keep your key from coming out of the ignition unless the car is put into park. The interlock is spring loaded and the ignition switch can be turned off without the interlock spring loading into position. This is typically due to drink residue being spilled onto the console from the drink holder right next to it. You can pop the left hand side trim loose from the left side of the console by turning the plastic screw at the rear edge 1/4 turn counterclockwise. You will be able to look up at the shifter and see a yellow plastic cap on the cable interlock. This is where it connects to the shifter. Turn the ignition key and watch to see if it's moving. You can push it manually if it doesn't move. Use a flashlight and check for drink residue on the arm the cap is attached to. I've used break free to successfully break up the residue. You'll need to spray a bit in and keep working the pivot back and forth if that's your problem. You'll need to spray some into the pivot as well as the cable where the cable goes into the sleeve about 2 inches forward of the interlock. There is a spring on the cable where it goes into the sleeve. These are the two points that drink residue causes the problem.

Gear shift won't move from Park sometimes. It's stuck!


If the car is inclined severly the shifter will be harder to move as more of a load rests on the park gear. You may have to pull it hard but should come out of park. Make sure your foot is firmly on the brake pedal too and the key is in the on position

1999 Volvo S80 stuck in park


Hi there this sounds like a common fault it also happens on xc70 xc90 an new s80 if you remove the suround from the gear selector you should be able to see the gear linkage cable too the left hand side towards the back of the cable there is a push fit lock nut it is yellow and plastic which locks cable into position it sounds as though the push nut is not gripping the cable if you gently prise open the yellow part to the left of th car it should open the cable is spring loaded so it will stay in position after releaseing the nut push the nut as far forward as it will go so it moves forward on the cable once you have done this push the yellow push nut back in to secure the cable then you should be able to use your car again but what i would sugest is to get it replaced as its started to wear and will only happen again at a later date hope this helps tony.t

I think you have Check Gear Shift Liver Lock System. Then You have to check Brake Padel Switch because you can move gear shifter by pressing brake padel. Is your brake Padel switch defect stuck in any position.
