Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine.. where it meets the engine, it should be there.

Look under the hood on the drivers side. It is up close to the firewall. Because the cowl sticks out over it, it is hard to see.

There are two bolts. As the bolts are remove it should come out.Pull the old thermostat (with gasket attached) out of the round, shallow depression in the engine which is just big enough to hold the thermostat.----------

I just got a 1994 Ford Aerostar XLT Passenger. the drive shows P R N D D 2 1. When can one use which D to drive, first or second?

It operates just like any other automatic that you have driven. Put in the D net to the N and let the transmission take care of everything.

How can we get to reducing consumption in the 1994 Ford Aerostar XLT passenger?

There's a bunch of things you can do. Start with a good healthy tune up, new filters (air, oil & fuel). Next make sure your tires are inflated to factory specs. Most neglected item on vehicles. Other suggestions, synthetic oil in trans, and wheel bearings greased w/synthetic grease. One last simple thing, every 3rd tankful pour in a bottle of STP gas treatment - keeps everything from fuel tank to injectors clean and running smooth. All of the above I can attest for..
