SOURCE: car starts then dies
Have your car recently paid a visit to the car wash? Did it start shutting down after you washed the bonnet?
If so then open the bonnet and dry out all the spark tops. Also check the wires for any leakage. Let someone start the car and your pay attention to the type of sound your car makes when dying. If its like a 'spark cackling' type of sound then its the problem with the spark plug assembly.
If spark system is OK then check the muffler for any clogging.
Check and replace air filter if found clogged with dirt.
Start the car and see if it continues to run at idle. Then depress the accelerator pedal and see if it dies.
If it runs at idle but dies when you depress gas pedal then check the fuel filter.
You might have some moisture in the fuel tank. If this is so then you need to remove all the fuel and clean the tank.

my 89 cutlass did the same thing....She would bog down ( when the service engine light came on)....Light would go off and she would run fine...Shop replaced fuel fiter and KNOCK SENSOR, runs great now, the service engine light stays off too. Ran a can of MG injector cleaner thru too.

Try taking the car to Autozone or similar business for a free scan of your computer (your car is a pre-OBD2 system and your mechanic may have a scanner that reads only post-'96 autos). The scan will usually only point to problem areas, not specific components. That's where the mechanic comes in with specific tests. Good luck!
