Air bag light came on when started the car and did not turn off as I was driving. This has never happened before. Main concern is if it is anything to worry about. Don't know if it is related but we had a lot of rain and wind last night, car is parked on the street and streets flooded over curbs. Nothing got in the car that I can tell. Otherwise nothing unusal I can think of.

Re: Airbag light in 97 cavalier is on
When the airbag light is on it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called th clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the wheel
Yea mine also came on take your fuses out my airbag blew in my face when i was driving so take the fuse out i was told taht it didnt work and that is why my light was on yea right last time i listen to anyone

Well the air bag light would not have anything to do with the engine. The warning light for the gauges would come on if the gauges needed attention. And that would happen if the engine died. When you turn the key on, does the gas gauge register ? Do you have spark and fuel pressure when you crank the engine ?
I assume you are counting the air bag light flash, If so light flash 19 is for an drivers side air bag circuit, problem which could be low resistance, circuit open ,short to voltage short to ground. and cannot be cleared or reset until the concern is corrected.ford motor vehicles air bag light will go out when concern is no longer present but will remain in memory, I would start by inspecting wiring under dash going up to steering wheel ,the air bag connector is located just to right of steering column when sitting in the drivers seat after removing the trim panel below the steering column and is a yellow connector, Please use caution when connecting or disconnecting any connectors to air bag system ,battery should be disconnected for min of ten min's prior to attempting any work on air bag curcuits. I have seen many problems in the past with the air bag itself also with the clock spring ,question does the horn, cruise control and steering wheel controls for audio system (IF SO EQuIPPED) work properly? if not there is very possibly a clock spring problem
When the light is on all the time there is a problem in the air bag system. This is something you will want to take to a service center soon, as long as the light is on the air bags will not deploy in an accident.
Hi there... i would be cautious with purchasing that vehicle. It may not have been in an accident but if the airbag light is on that means that there is something wrong with it. Either the sensor or the bag itself. Could turn out to be nothing at all but then could be something that could cause injury. Other thing to keep in mind is if you are ever in an accident where the airbag should deploy and it doesn't you could run the risk of severe injury. Have the dealer repair the problem if you really want the vehicle. Put it in writing on the contract so you can back it up if anything should go wrong.
i installed the kit from strutmaster rides and drives great, did it in my garage in less than 2 hours, only problem is the airsuspension light you are suppose to clip keep light on,and will need to go to lincoln to turn offmbut does not effect anything on car so i just drive with suspension light on.
You need access to VagCom (the diagnostic software from VW and Audi). You can download it free at www.ross-tech.com, and buy the interface cable for your laptop on eBay for about $20. Or you can pay an hour's labor at a VW/Audi dealer to have them turn off the light.
What probably happened is similar to what happened in my 99 Audi A4. I have side airbags in the seats, and if the front seats are moved all the way back for any reason, it puts tension on the yellow airbag connector under the seat. That pulls it out just enough to open the contact and trip an airbag failure light. What I did was zip-tie the connector tightly (be very careful of the wires, as they're small and you don't want to pinch them), then use VagCom to turn off the light. Using the software is the only way to turn the light off - no ignition cycling or drive cycles, or number of miles driven, nor a battery disconnect, can reset the light.
Use VagCom to find out which airbag is giving you trouble, zip-tie its connector, and have the light turned off. Then you're set.
