Airbag light in 97 cavalier is on

Air bag light came on when started the car and did not turn off as I was driving. This has never happened before. Main concern is if it is anything to worry about. Don't know if it is related but we had a lot of rain and wind last night, car is parked on the street and streets flooded over curbs. Nothing got in the car that I can tell. Otherwise nothing unusal I can think of.

When the airbag light is on it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called th clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the wheel

How to reset AIRBAG SRS Light on 2003 - 2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe

Hi, on most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for at 6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident.
The flashing light on your car is telling there is a problem.

How to reset AIRBAG SRS Light on 2003 - 2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe
Ignition Key Method:

Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car).

After the AIR BAG warning lamp lights for 7 seconds, turn IGNITION off within 1 second.

Wait 4 seconds.

Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car).

After the AIR BAG warning lamp lights for 7 seconds, turn IGNITION off within 1 second.

Wait 4 seconds.

Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car).

After the AIR BAG warning lamp lights for 7 seconds, turn IGNITION off within 1 second.

Wait 4 seconds.

Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car).

Wait 3 seconds.

Turn IGNITION off.

Wait 2 seconds.

START Car (the light may be blinking slower than before).

Wait 3 seconds.

Turn IGNITION off.

Wait 3 seconds.

START Car.

This is a little easier To reset the light simply turn the iginition to the on position, (you dont need to start it). All the lights should stay on for thier diagnostic check. As soon as the airbag light goes off, before it starts flashing, immeditatly turn the car off. Repeat this 3 or 4 times (turning to on then off) and the light should go away

How to disable airbag light

If this is the Air Bag fault light, then have your vehicle checked out and repaired for a failure in the airbag system. Your air bags may not deploy in an accident if you don't get it fixed. When you start your vehicle, the computer checks for the presence of an undeployed airbag. If it doesn't see an airbag it will turn on the light. This could be something as simple as a poor connection. If your planning on driving your can after an airbag deployment, this may be a legal issue, depending on where you live. Legal issues would also apply if your trying to sell a rebuilt auto, without airbags.

Flashing air bag light1998 infiniti

If the airbag didnt pop and the light is on, did you unplug any electrical cables connected to SRS without removing the battery terminals first, you have to go to a local mechanic to reset the SRS which cost anywhere from $50-80. That's if your in Vic, Australia

What does it mean when the airbag light comes on?

Either the sensor in the bumper has lost communication with the airbag module, or the airbag module is bad, or the airbag package itself is damaged somehow.

Air bag light

Usually a lit airbag can be attributed to faulty wiring, crash sensor behind the front bumper, bad connection between the airbag and lower part of the steering column, or a faulty airbag module. I've also heard of clockspring wiring harness problems. An airbag "on" light means that your airbag system is INACTIVE. Be careful. Check for a safety recall. You must have the battery disconnected for at least 15 minutes for a reset and double check your battery. I know it seems simple, but a poor battery will trip a code. 15 minutes allows the SDM (Sensing Diagnostic Module or Airbag computer) to discharge the backup power for airbag. Do this especially if you're poking around the controls. It sounds like a bad connection which is not allowing communication between all parts of the system. Also check the fuse (can't hurt).

Air Bag light stays on after engine starts.

You need access to VagCom (the diagnostic software from VW and Audi). You can download it free at www.ross-tech.com, and buy the interface cable for your laptop on eBay for about $20. Or you can pay an hour's labor at a VW/Audi dealer to have them turn off the light.

What probably happened is similar to what happened in my 99 Audi A4. I have side airbags in the seats, and if the front seats are moved all the way back for any reason, it puts tension on the yellow airbag connector under the seat. That pulls it out just enough to open the contact and trip an airbag failure light. What I did was zip-tie the connector tightly (be very careful of the wires, as they're small and you don't want to pinch them), then use VagCom to turn off the light. Using the software is the only way to turn the light off - no ignition cycling or drive cycles, or number of miles driven, nor a battery disconnect, can reset the light.

Use VagCom to find out which airbag is giving you trouble, zip-tie its connector, and have the light turned off. Then you're set.
