Question about 2001 Kia Sportage

Sometimes if the overdrive button isn't on the hold will flash and sometimes its the button itself

Your hold light should turn off when you turn the vehicle off and turn it on. Obviously if it is still on, on the shifter there is two buttons on the side press the bottom smaller one that should release the hold light apply the brake while doing this and it must be in park also. If that does not work unfortunately it could be a sensor issue ie.. speed sensor or the hold switch is still making contact it is a normally open switch. Take it to a place that does free diagnostic check off of the computer and see what they may find because checking sensor continuity is not for a novice mechanic. Good luck

I am not sure what a hold light is, if you speaking of a break stopping light staying on, i would look at the break switch at the break pedal and pull up on your break pedal see if stop lights go out..if they do the switch should have adjustment..make sure lights work perfect after adjustment before going back out on the road, if you are hitting you engine starter to make engine start i would think its time for new starter and cylinoid and also check your batter cables make sure everything is tight and cables are good ...make sure the neg. cables has good clean ground conection to engine......

Look on the shifter lever, just bellow the push button. There is another push button there. That's the one you press or depress to keep the transmission on 3rd. gear. Just press it again and the hold light should come off.

SOURCE: 99 kia sportage starter
if knocking on the starter makes it work everytime then it might need a shim installed between the starter and the block to hold it in a slightly different position to keep the drive gear from wedging into the flywheel

SOURCE: Hold light flashing on dash.
We unhooked the battery and left it unhooked all night. This morning when he reconnected it and started it, it started right up and the hold light and our check engine light went off. We did press the hold button and it came on and went back off when we hit it again.

Should be able to take it apart and take the battery out for 15-30 seconds or longer. Then put it back in. While your at it, you might as well change the battery but doing this will reset it.
