If your running a car with injectors and not a carbeurator, it could be the cars computer is messed thus its sending the wrong ratio of fuel and oxygen giving the wrong amount of throttle. .

Try to get it running a bit to warm up the exhaust. Take a point and shoot thermometer and take the temp of the cat. If temps exceed 400 degrees I would start to suspect a plugged cat.

99 grand am v6 runs great then dies, driving and at idle. within seconds of starting it or even after driving for 45min. rpm gauge jumps up and down and hesitates when accelerating. no engine light, ...

Autos can be frustrating! I call it ghost in the machine...After all that, I would check the pressure at the fuel rail. My mother's Volvo turbo acted similarly and it was because of a worn fuel pump that was regulated electronicly. After 2 Volvo techs spent an hour on it + test drives, they told me that my diagnosis was correct, the fuel pressure at the rail was intermittently eratic and performed normally most of the time. No problems since the replacement 2 yrs ago. Let me know if you make progress and I'll check with my neighbor who has one and drag races as a hobby...MK

Will start but rpm gauge jumps up and down then it dies

The problem you describe has NUMEROUS causes. Most common of these is a COIL is going bad. The RPM gauge gets its signal from the ignition coil/crank sensor circuit (could be either one OR could be the wiring between the engine control module (ECM) and the engine components. Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

My 97 LeSABRE stalls. AT LOW SPEED AND WHEN I PUT IT INTO PARK. RPM GAUGE JUMPS UP AND DOWN VOLT LIGHT COMES ON.

The only reason the voltage light comes on is because it is stalling and the reason the rpm gauge goes up is that is races up and then dies down..Sounds either you have a vacuum leak or a fuel issue..
