How do I remove the distributor rotor

I can not pull it off, rotor says "screw" with an arrow pointing toward the middle

The screw is on the underneath side of the rotor it must be removed to remove rotor

I took the distributor out of my 85 ranger w\out marking where the rotor was . I put all the timing marks wher theyr supposed to be and the distributor back in but it wont start now. What do i do


Pull #1 spark plug and bring that cylinder up (turn crank pulley) until air starts to blow out ( this is the compression stroke) and the timing mark on the front crank pulley is pointed at 0 top dead center TDC for short. Then reinstall the distributor with the rotor pointed towards the number 1 spark plug wire contact inside the distributor cap.

How to install a Distributor install on a 1988 Ford ranger 2.3


First bring the engine up to top dead center and compression stroke confirmed on No 1 cylinder. Next remove distributor cap and verify the rotor is pointing toward No 1 cylinder. Next get a paint marker preferably yellow, and mark on the engine block exactly where the rotor is pointing. Next make a mark on the distributor and the block in line so as to make sure the distributor is aligned exactly in the same location it was removed from. Take note of what direction the pointer moved as you lift the distributor, as the rotor will have to be pointed in that same direction when you go to put the distributor back. It should rotate an 1/8th of a turn as you remove it. If another distributor is being put in it's place, then mark the new distributor in the exact same place as the old distributor where you marked it.

I have 351 motor and have tdc but the rotor is pointing toward #8 is that right?


Depends.
If you have tdc on the number one cylinder, and it is tdc on the compression stroke, then the rotor should be close to cyl one.
A four cycle engine has four up and down strokes, compression, power, exhaust, and so on.
Depending on the make model and year, the firing order could be 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 which would mean the timing chain or the distributor is one cylinder too far advanced if it is pointing to number 8.

How to remove distributor on 1984 monte carlo 305 v8


bring engine to top dead center #1 with the timing marks. remove distributer cap and note position of rotor direction and mark on the distributor housing were the rotor is pointing. also mark the position of the distributor mark to a position on the motor, then unbolt the distributor holding bolt and remove. pull up on the distributor and note which way the rotor moves as you pull the distributor out. again mark where the rotor is pointing when the distributor is out. the reason for the marking of rotor position and distributor position is so when you reassemble you line up the marks to get it into the proper position when the distributor is back in place. then you have to check the timing and set. as far as the pickup coil remove the distributor gear lock pin remove the gear and remove the distributor shaft to replace the coil. reassemble in reverse order.

No. 1 cylinder. Reinstall the spark plug and wire.3 Install the distributor, making sure the gasket is in place, and with the rotor facing the No. 1 cylinder. With the curvature of the gear on the distributor and camshaft, the rotor will turn about 30 degrees when meshed. Place the distributor shaft in the hole, but hold the distributor high enough so that it does not contact the gear. Point the rotor toward the No. 1 cylinder, then rotate it counterclockwise about 30 degrees and insert the distributor. If the rotor does not point in the right direction yet, lift the distributor and turn the rotor a little farther and insert it again until it points to the No. 1. If the rotor keeps lining up wrong, remove the distributor all the way, and insert the long screwdriver in the hole. Turn the oil pump drive a little, then try the distributor again.4 Install the distributor hold-down clamp and bolt. Loosely tighten the bolt so the distributor can still be turned.5 Rotate the distributor so that the vacuum advance, if there is one, is an equal distance from the firewall and the carburetor. Lay the distributor cap on, and pay attention to a spark plug wire terminal location in relation to the rotor. Once you've found a spark plug terminal that is very close to the rotor end, make a mark on the distributor housing directly below the center of the terminal location. Remove the cap, and rotate the distributor housing so the mark just made is exactly under the rotor end. Move the distributor housing counterclockwise another 5 degrees, and tighten the distributor hold-down bolt with a wrench.6 Install the distributor cap, paying attention to which terminal the mark is under and which terminal is closest to the rotor end. Use a screwdriver to tighten the hold-down screws on the cap.7Install the No. 1 spark plug wire in the terminal in front of the rotor end. Install the remainder of the wires in a clockwise direction using the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

    Removal;
    Rotate the engine until the No. 1 piston is on top dead center of its compression stroke.Remove The distributor cap and then mark where the rotor is pointing on the side of the distributor with some white out or anything that you might be able to see when replacing the distributor back into position. Disconnect the TFI module by pressing the catch and pulling on it.Loosen and remove the distributor hold-down bolt.The distributor should slide straight out. It is also necessary to remove the distributor to change the TFI module if you had to do this in a separate operation.


    Install:
    Rotate the distributor shaft so the rotor points toward the mark on the distributor housing that you made previously.Install the distributor hold-down bolt tighten slightly. Recheck the initial timing after installing the distributor cap. Tighten the hold-down bolt and recheck the timing. Adjust again if necessary.Thank you for your questions

    Replaced distributor and new one would not line up. Lined up rotor as best I could and tried to start. Ran rough and horn beeped twice!. Removed, put at TDC and lined up rotor with #1 plug. Now engine...


    wow the engine timing is definatly off. first things first are you sure you have correct replacement distributor? you may have the timing 180 degrees off, the easiest way to set tdc is remove #1 spark plug insert long handle screw driver and then line up 0 degree timing mark on crank shaft pulley to timing cover while watching screwdriver to raising as high as possible, this is ensuring that the #1 piston is all the way up. now you are surely on tdc. at this point remove distributor cap and se what cylinder # the rotor is pointing to. the firing order is 1,5,3,6,2,4 with the rotor moving in a clockwise motion here is a picture to help.cables.jpg if the rotor is not pointing which i doubt it will be remove distributor and re install with rotor pointing towards cyl. #1. hopr this was helpful if so please rate positive.

    How to replace an ignition rotor to a 1988 Ford Escort


    Your vehicle may be equipped with either of the following ignition systems, depending on the year and engine combination:
    * 1981-82 1.3L and 1.6L engines: Dura Spark II Ignition System
    * 1982-85 1.6L Non-EFI and 1986 1.9L Non-EFI engines: Thick Film Ignition I (TFI-I) System
    * 1983-90 1.6L EFI and 1.9L EFI engines: Thick Film Ignition IV (TFI-IV) System

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2. Remove the distributor from the engine.
    3. Place the distributor assembly on a workbench.
    4. Remove the two TFI ignition module retaining screws.
    5. Pull the right side of the module down the distributor mounting flange and then back up to disengage the module terminals from the connector in the distributor base. The module may then be pulled toward the flange and away from the distributor.
    Do not attempt to lift the module from the mounting surface, except as explained in Step 3, as the pins will break at the distributor module connector.


    To install:
    1. Coat the baseplate of the TFI ignition module uniformly with a 1 / 32 in. (0.8mm) of silicone dielectric compound WA-10 or equivalent.
    2. Position the module on the distributor base mounting flange. Carefully position the module toward the distributor bowl and engage the three connector pins securely.
    3. Install the retaining screws. Tighten to 15-35 inch lbs. (1.7-4.0 Nm), starting with the upper right screw.
    4. Install the distributor into the engine. Install the cap and wires.
    5. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
    6. Recheck the initial timing. Adjust the timing, if necessary.

    Need to know how to install a new distributor and the firing order for a 4 cyl


    Firing order is 1342. #1 cylinder is closest to front. (By pulleys)



    See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4
    Engine Not Rotated
    1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
    2. Turn the engine over until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of the compression stroke.
    3. Remove the distributor cap. Remove the wire harness connected to the side of the distributor.
    4. Mark the position of the distributor base in relation to the engine block with white paint or other suitable marking material, for reference when reinstalling the distributor.
    5. Loosen and remove the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp.
    6. Carefully begin lifting the distributor up and out. Once the shaft is clear of the engine compartment, inspect the shaft for cracks in the O-seal, the condition of the shaft drive gear and any other part which could lead to distributor problems in the future.

    To install:
    1. Check to make sure the engine is still at TDC. Inspect distributor shaft hole to make sure it is free of dirt.
    2. Rotate distributor shaft until the painted mark on rotor is pointing toward painted mark on engine block made during removal.
    3. Continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane the switch stator assembly.
    4. Dip entire distributor gear in engine assembly lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent.

    If installing a new distributor, ALWAYS add engine assembly lubricant to the engine oil by pouring it through distributor hole onto the camshaft gear. Run engine at idle for at least five minutes before driving.
    1. Rotate distributor in block to align leading edge of vane and vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.

    If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of the camshaft gear.
    1. Install the distributor retaining bolt and tighten so the distributor can just barely be moved.
    2. Install the distributor cap and, tighten screws to 18-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.6 Nm).
    3. Reconnect battery cable. Start vehicle, and check timing. If timing needs adjustment, refer to the Ignition Timing section.
    4. After timing has been set, tighten distributor hold-down bolt to 17-2 ft. lbs. (23-34 Nm).

    Engine Rotated with Distributor Removed
    1. If the crankshaft was rotated while the distributor was removed, the engine must be brought to TDC on the compression stroke of the No. 1 cylinder.
    2. Remove the No. 1 spark plug. Place a finger over the hole and rotate the crankshaft slowly in the direction of normal rotation until engine compression is felt.
    3. When engine compression is felt at the spark plug hole, indicating that the piston is approaching TDC, continue to turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the pulley is aligned with the 0 mark on the engine front cover.
    4. Turn the distributor shaft until the ignition rotor is at the No. 1 firing position.
    5. Rotate distributor shaft so the blade on rotor is pointing toward paint mark on distributor base made during removal.
    6. Continue rotating rotor slightly so leading edge of the vane is centered in vane switch stator assembly. Verify rotor is pointing at No. 1 mark on distributor base.

    If vane and vane switch stator cannot be aligned by rotating distributor in cylinder block, remove distributor enough to just disengage distributor gear from camshaft gear. Rotate rotor enough to engage distributor gear on another tooth of the camshaft gear.
    1. Install the distributor retaining bolt and tighten so the distributor can just barely be moved.
    2. Install the rotor and distributor cap and connect all wiring. Tighten distributor cap to 18-23 inch lbs. (2.0-2.6 Nm).

    Replacing distributor and I lost the position of the rotor and truck wont start... do I need to take #1 cyl to top? and the aline rotor?


    Yes, when cyclinder one is at top, the rotor should be pointing towards the #1 spark plug wire
