SOURCE: service engine light comes on

I had the exact same problem on my 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine with the 4.6L Northstar engine.

Changed the O2 sensor, and the problem seems less frequent, now. If the Service Engine Soon light comes on, try to clear it and see how long it takes for it to come back.

If you purchase an obd-II compliant scanner, it will have an 'erase code' button on it.
The engine scanner in question costs less than $100 these days, and covers 1996 to 2005 vehicles, so you're sure to use it on other vehicles, in the future.

Try Sears, Walmart, or your local auto parts store for purchase details.

Since you are having the same problem I had, it may be a problem that is common to occur on the 1997 Deville with the Northstar engine. :)

SOURCE: service engine light on in a 2004 cadillac seille

Wow! I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard this. I would be a RICH man! Please READ the article below to get a better understanding of what is going on:

What Else Could Be Wrong?

After reading the article, maybe you will understand that "lean oxygen sensor" codes are RARELY the fault of the oxygen sensor. When they are, it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that BOTH upstream oxygen sensors would be defective at the same time. You probably have a large vacuum leak or a bad mass airflow sensor. Proper diagnosis required.

Rough idle vibrates and po171 code service engine soon. jamesrowland9@aol.com

Hi, a Ford P0171 is a LEAN code for cylinder bank 1, and P0174 is a LEAN code for cylinder bank 2. These codes commonly occur on many Ford vehicles, and are set when the powertrain control module (PCM) sees the air/fuel mixture is running too lean (too much air, not enough fuel).
When the Check Engine Light comes on, either one of these codes, or both, may be found when a code reader or scan tool is plugged into the vehicle diagnostic connector. IF the vehicle is driven long enough, typically both codes will be set.
A P0171 lean code for bank 1 is the cylinder bank on the RIGHT (passenger) side of the engine on Ford vehicles with a V6 or V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.

A lean fuel condition may exist if the engine is sucking in too much air and/or the fuel system is not delivering enough fuel. If bad enough, a lean fuel condition may cause lean misfire, a rough idle, hesitation or stumble when accelerating, and/or poor engine performance.
Unmetered air can enter the engine through a vacuum leak, a dirty airflow sensor that is not reading airflow accurately, an EGR valve is not closing and is leaking exhaust into the intake manifold, an EGR valve that is allowing too much flow (because the EGR differential pressure sensor that monitors EGR flow is faulty and is under-reporting EGR flow).
If the problem is not enough fuel, the underling cause may be a weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter, leaky fuel pressure regulator or dirty fuel injectors.

My truck is showing codes 171 and 174. Can you help

P0174 Generic Definition

Fuel Trim Bank Two Condition
- The ECM has detected a rich or lean air/fuel ratio condition on engine bank two

Probable Cause[s]

  1. If bank one and two are set together suspect a fuel pressure condition or MAF sensor fault
  2. Failed HO2S21
  3. Ignition misfire condition
  4. Fuel injector problem
  5. Engine mechanical condition

    P0171 Generic Definition

    Fuel trim bank one condition
    - The powertrain control module uses the oxygen sensor to calculate the air/fuel ratio of the engine. The computer has recognized a rich or lean condition on one engine bank only.

    Probable Cause[s]

    1. If bank one and two codes set together suspect fuel pressure or MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor
    2. Oxygen sensor defective
    3. Ignition misfire-repair
    4. Fuel injector problem

Had a bad sensor and replaced it, still haveing trouble

yes it could be the fuel pump and you might try to change the fuel filter first. cheeper and easy to change compared to a fuel pump.pull the battery cable off pos. side for 20 seconds and replace it, the codes will be cleared and if it comes on again, the code will be what is going on now, hope this helps, thanks robert b.

take sample of your fuel into clear plastic bottle from fuel line
      is there any water present?
this can cause these codes and then not go on storing codes for other bank even though that bank will be missfiring also due to water & P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected being logged
check all connections to coils/leads & wiring connectors
due to miss fire codes for cyl 1,3,5 all on the same bank
also look and check for air leaks on that bank (hose knocked off or splithose)inlet manifold gasket, brake booster etc...
3 injectors being blocked slightly on same bank posible!!!
      check wires and signal

was it running like this b4 tune up & repairs?
      this is what codes are
P0170 Fuel Trim Malfunction (Bank 1)
      P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
      P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
      P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
      P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

the last code is for trans due to misfire/running lean on bank 1 probably a torque problem code

Check engine light on;engine codes p0420 and p0773

I looked up the codes you posted.
P0420 is showing a bad oxygen sensor on bank #1, the one down by the catalytic converter.
P0773 is an electrical problem with the shift solenoid E.
A bad oxygen sensor would cause lower fuel milage.
