SOURCE: After having heads rebuilt and

Replace the adjustment nuts with new ones, they are a special type of nut that keeps its setting by friction between the crimp and the threads, this friction is given by a slight crimp to the nut that makes it out of round near the top of the treads, u can also install a product to the threads called Loctite red thread lock, U can also buy locking rocker arm adjustment nuts that use an allen screw to "lock" in the adjustment, these are avail from amny speed shops, one i use is Summit racing, another is Jegs speed, please keep in mind that other factors can cause this, one is low oil pressure caused by a camshaft bearings not being installed correctly, there are holes that allow oil to flow properly, if they are not lined up correctly to the block oil gallery then this can starve the lifter for oil pressure and they get noisy.

I have 91 dodge Dakota with a 3.9 L I'm trying to find the rocker arm torque spec and the sequence of tighting them done could you help me with that ?

There is no seguence, but you have to do it very gradually and evenly as the valve springs compress.
  1. Make sure all rocker arms with an RH stamped on them are installed to the right of those with an LH. Install the assembly with the notch on the end of the shaft pointing to the engine centerline and to the rear of the right bank or to the front of the left bank. Make sure the longer stamped steel retainers are at the number 2 and 4 positions. Tighten the bolts evenly and gradually to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

What's the torque spec for 3.9 dakota rocker arm bolts

In the 2000 Dakota, the torque is 21 ft lb/28 N m. I suspect this torque is the same for all 3.9 L V6 engines.

Rocker arm falling off

chrysler corp built 2 defective motors for approximately 14yrs 1999 till 2013. The 3.7 v6 & the 4.7 v8 installed
in many dodge,
ram, jeep, dakota,& durango models. These motors have a problem of the rocker arms falling off at around 70,000 mi
or more.I know because my 03 ram had this problem, but not till 219,000 mi,I was lucky.
they fell off 3 times in 3 weeks, after putting them back on each time, but my truck was still almost perfect in
every other way.So of course i wanted to save it.
So i set out to find a solution after calling around to every parts store including chrysler corp.Just to find out
no one knew for sure what the problem was or how to fix it.Well I wasn't satisfied with the answers i had gotten.
So i was stuck to figuring it out myself. As I always try to think of everything logically I started thinking the
only way the rocker could fall off is if it had enough or too much clearnce between the cam, valve, & lash adjuster
.What could cause this you ask, simple logic the lash adjuster is collapsing overnight causing too much clearance &
letting the rocker fall off before the oil pressure comes up, & pumps the lash adjuster back up.This is when they
always fall off on start up after sitting a while usually overnight. So i desighned a clip to hold the rocker arm
in place, till the oil presure comes up. & it works perfect no more problems on my truck for more than 10,000 mi.
We have now sold several sets probably over 1,000 with no complaints. The auto world needs to know about these so
other people can save there trucks as i did mine.My company name is [] phone # 816-274-2730 if you
have any questions call jim.or see our video on youtube at [ video]
ps.After i got my patent i emailed chrysler corp to let them know what i had discovered they sent me a letter
back more than a page long letting me know they had their own inventors, engineers, mechanics, etc & didn,t need
my help.If they have all these people why didn,t they work on this problem & fix it. I'm sure they knew about it
for years before i had my problem It took me less than 2 months to figure it out,& fix it.should this have been
a recall issue i don't know.
thanks jim hardisty

Valve settings on a 1992 dodge dakota v6 engine

You should have hydraulic lifters, unless someone changed them along the way. Normally nobody puts solid lifters in a vehicle that is a driven on the street daily. That being said, the normal adjustment for hydraulic lifters is normally take all clearance out of rocker arm to lifter plus an extra 1/2 to 3/4 turn. I used to do this with the motor running, I would adjust it tighter till it quits rattling and then tighten an extra 1/2 turn. If the lifters are bad, however, the rattling will never go away. I hope this helps.

Trying to set the intake and exhaust valves on a 2001 dodge dakota v6 what does the gap need to be and i also need to know the firing order

Your engine uses hydraulic lifters and the clearance is not adjustable. Just make sure to tighen the rockers to 21 Ft/Lbs.

Firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2..Cylinders 1-3-5 are on the DRIVERS side Front to back and 2-4-6 are on the PASSENGER side Front to back.

2005 dodge dakota has a rattle for 5 seconds at

Sounds like a rocker arm is out of adjustment or one of the rocker arms are worn more than the rest. If you find one loose rocker arm and the rest are tight then the entire rocker assembly will need to be removed and the one rocker arm will have to be replaced. Thats on a V6 and V8 models . Now on the four cylinder you have to remove the timing belt cover, unbolt the timing belt and hold tension on it to keep the belt from jumping off the crankshaft gear. Remove the rocker arm cover and you will have to remove the cam to get to the roller rocker arms. There is alot of work to do to get this job done. If you do not have all the tools to do this with, then it would be better to take the truck to a mechanics shop for repairs. Hope this will help you.
