Bring no1 piston to TDC firing on the timing mark on the balancer and line the rotor button point to under no1 plug lead and place the distributor in the block . As it goes in the rotor will turn out of position so lift up the distributor until you can reposition the rotor just forward of the position so that when the distributor is full in the rotor lines up with no1 plug lead. The movement is from the helix on the drive gears and you have to compensate for that when positioning the rotor button.. leave the retaining clamp just loose enough to turn the body of the distributor . After fitting all the leads in the correct firing order . start the engine and using a timing light move the distributor body until you get the timing mark on the required degrees advanced ( normally around 12 ) and then lock up the clamp.

I have a 1997 Chevy Surburban with a 350 engine - check engine light came on - code reads p1345 - it only came on when putting another distributer in - the other one was bad. Any ideas? Thank you!

this DTC determines,if the distributor is installed incorrectly,or if there is a mechanical malfunction in the engine. check the following items A loose or missing distributor hold down bolt A loose CMP sensor causing a variance in the sensor signal Incorrectly Installed distributor-1 tooth off in either advance or ****** positions Aloose distributor rotor on the distributor shaft excessive free play in the timing chain and gear assembly.

2001 astro chevy van 4.3 engines need to set the timing

The distributor in that engine can only be installed in one position. The hold down is built onto the distributor meaning when it is installed and the engine runs the computer is responsible for the timing. The distributor will move a little but won't correct major timing errors.

Installed new distributor in 97 Chevy Vortec V6

Check the wire harness to the Ignition control module (ICM) or replace it. It cost around $40,00 from Auto Zone and it's common for the ICM to fail, or it may just be starting to fail and it's also know that the OEM distributor had a screen vent at the bottom of the distributor for ventilation to prevent condensation from forming in the distributor. Check to make sure your new distributor has a vent and that it's not plugged up with shipping plastic. Condensation may be forming causing the misfire in the distributor. Good luck and keep me posted.
