How to find top dead center on the compression stroke of a 1987 toyota 22re


there are many ways. (ill assume the damper pulley marks are ok)
1: valve cover off, watch valves #1, all closed at mark is TDC firing.
2: with cam cover off, front of engine watch the marks. per FSM>
3 the blow rag out of the spark #1 hole trick. ask.:
4: the compression gauge trick. max press at TDC is TDC true.
micky mouse can stick is finger in the spark hole and feel the the intake valve but not me,,,, ok, way 5 a bore scope.......

What is the correct timming mark or degrees for 1962 ford falcon 170 motor


According to my Chilton book it is 4 degrees Before TDC for a standard transmission and 10 degrees Before TDC on the automatic. The marks are on the pulley it says, not the damper. It doesn't say what size the engine is. It does list a 170 and a 144 for 1963. In 1963 the timing is 6 degrees BTDC for the standard and 12 BTDC for the automatic and the mark is on the damper. On 2000 cc engines, turn the crankshaft until the two round locating holes in the camshaft pulley are visible from the rear side of the pulley, looking forward from the left-side of the car. When these two holes are parallel to the ground, the timing pointer on the crankshaft pulley should point to TDC. If the drive belt is dislocated, the crankshaft damper will be retarded or advanced 19° per cog on the belt.

If the engine you are working on does not have the two locating holes on the rear side of the camshaft pulley, then you will have to remove the drive belt cover and observe that when the crankshaft timing marks are aligned to TDC of the compression stroke of the No. 1 cylinder, the distributor rotor is pointing to the index mark on the upper lip of the distributor housing which coincides with No. 1 spark plug tower, and the pointer on the camshaft pulley is aligned with the index mark on the cylinder head.

On 2300 cc engines, there is an access plug provided in the cam drive belt cover so that the camshaft timing can be checked without removing the drive belt cover. Remove the access plug, turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the crankshaft damper indicates TDC, and observe that the timing mark on the camshaft drive sprocket is aligned with the pointer on the inner belt cover. Also, the rotor of the distributor must align with the No. 1 cylinder firing position.


CAUTION:

After any procedure requiring removal of the rocker arms on the 2300, each lash adjuster must be fully collapsed after assembly, then released. This must be done before the camshaft is turned.

Where is tdc on my 2001 dodge ram 1500


top dead center
ok look at your damper pulley its the pulley at the bottom of the motor
the damper pulley has a line cut in it
line the mark up with the degree marks
you want to put it on the zero mark
once you have done this you are on top dead center
also number one cylinder must be on a compression stroke
pull spark plug number one turn the motor over with your finger
over the hole when you feel compression that's when you line
up the marks.

I know how to set the timing on an engine but im having a problem setting the distributor after doing the head gaskets on my 98 blazer 4.3, im seeing 2 makes on the damper and im not sure which one is the...


The TDC mark is usually the second one in the direction of rotation. To make sure you have the right mark, if you still have the tappet cover off, number 1 cylinder valves should rock at TDC when you move the crank backwards and forwards.

5.2L and 5.9L Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap and coil
  3. Remove the distributor cap retaining hooks or screws and remove the distributor cap.
  4. Note the position of the rotor in relation to the base. Scribe a mark on the base of the distributor and on the engine to facilitate reinstallation.

The distributor must be bright to Top Dead Center (TDC) before removal.
  1. Attach a socket to the crankshaft damper retaining bolt and slowly rotate the engine clockwise until the indicating mark on the crankshaft damper is aligned with the 0 degree mark on the timing chain cover. The distributor rotor should now be aligned to the CYL. NO 1 alignment mark stamped into the camshaft position sensor. If not repeat the process until TDC is achieved.
  2. Disengage the camshaft position sensor connector and remove the rotor.
  3. Unfasten the distributor hold-down bolt and remove the distributor and hold-down clamp.

on a proper TDC timed dead Compression your harmonic damper has a mark that tells you such Zero status is alighned with a mark on the motor or plastic cover it puts you to perfect timeing

Firing order and timing for 292 ford


The firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2, distributor turns counter-clockwise. The ignition timing can be set using marks on the vibration damper. The wide mark is TDC (Top Dead Center), each mark after the wide mark represents 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 degrees before TDC. Set timing 3 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). In addition, valve timingis set like this: Intake opens: 12 degrees BTDC
Exhaust Closes: 8 degrees ATDC

I have a 2.3 how do i install the timing belt


Align harmonic damper mark at TDC with #1 piston at top. You'll have to remove harmonic damper on front of crank. (You can do it without removing the damper, but it's a real pain in the rear.) This WILL require an industrial strength impact wrench to break the bolt loose. Pull spark plugs. Makes last step easy and you can use a screwdriver to make sure #1 is at top. You'll see tick marks on the crank pulley, the cam pulley and the auxillary shaft pulley. These marks must line up. Use a straight edge (ruler, piece of flat metal stock, etc.) to make sure they're aligned. Pull tensioner arm back and lock it there. Install belt around pullies. Now comes the tricky part. Whne you release the tensioner, the auxillary shaft will rotate at least one tooth off of alignment. Release tension and compensate auxillary shaft postion. You want the marks aligned with the belt under tension. Now using a long wrench, rotate the engine clockwise by turning the crank balancer bolt. After 2 complete revolutions back to TDC, confirm timing mark alignment on the pullies. If they're off, redo it until they're aligned. Good luck.

You must find the cam lock bar and crank lock pin to do this job properly, otherwise you can bend some valves and that becomes expensive..the front crank damper has a mark to line up with a mark on the timing cover for #1 TDC, but the cam lock bar is what aligns the cams into position. The crank lock pin is helpful but not 100% necessary...
