My mate just bought a Mk4 Golf gti 1.8t. When changing from 2nd to 3rd it just cut and refused to start. We tried everything to start it, and eventually we locked the car then unlocked it again and then it started. What could have caused this problem when on the move and past 1st gear?
It might be the e break sensor . ive heard of them causing shut downs . also check all fluid levels if your coolant is too low the sensor will shut it down lol. and i think theres a break light recall that might have something to do with it . take it in to vw if you have the means for a scan . of find someone in your area with a vag com . it can read the error codes from the computer . good luck

Have you lost 1st, 2nd and reverse? Yes? 1.8 litre engine? This is a common fault on the gearbox. (They use it on Audi TT's). Your best option is to get it to a gearbox specialist. Trying to fix this at home without the correct tools could take you days. The problem is inside the gearbox. A rivet holding one of the gear selectors in position has snapped. A major effort to repair a simple problem.
