1391 is "Intermittent loss of CMP or CKP". CMP is the cam position sensor, CKP is the crankshaft sensor. If this problem only started after you did the transmission, it is possibly with the crank sensor. The cam sensor is inside the distributor. It could be in the wiring to the sensors, the electrical connector, or the magnet on the torque converter that the crank sensor gets a signal from. 3 wires: the orange wire is a 5 volt reference signal-check if you have 5 volts with key on. The black wire (blue stripe) is the sensor ground wire. The gray wire is the crank sensor signal. All 3 wires come out of the PCM. Maybe you pinched the wires working on the transmission. Check the connector carefully for bent pins or dirt-spray with CRC brand electronic cleaner or similar. Might as well check the cam sensor at its connector, too. Both sensors share the same orange 5 volt reference wire, and same ground wire-the wires are spliced going to both. If you can't find a problem in the wiring, you may need to check the magnet or whatever it is on the torque converter, that the crank sensor picks up a signal from. Maybe you can see something with the sensor removed, or maybe you have to pull the bell housing back to investigate.

I just read a little more: one fellow had a cracked flex plate and it threw that code- it was cracked right around the hub and threw the sensor signal off. Keep that in mind!

The transmission was slipping for some period of time
You were unaware of it

Now that you changed the fluid, the new
fluid only made it slip worse

I only tell you this, because I once owned a
trans repair business

You didn't do anything wrong,you just didn't
know you has issues

The trans will have to come out and be

It sounds to me that the clutch material in the transmission might be breaking down. Before too long I would have the transmission rebuilt or replaced. If you wait too much longer the transmission will start to slip and pretty soon you will have NO gears but first and reverse.

1998 dodge ram 4x4 transmission problems

You will need to get the transmission rebuilt. With the info that you have provided the direct clutches are welded together. Becareful about getting it rebuilt, most shops see Dodge transmissions and they see dollar signs. You should be able to get it rebuilt for around $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on amount of damaged hard parts. Thanks and good luck with your repair.
