SOURCE: the break light is on

540i bmw 2000
The brake light on the dashboard will come on if the brake fluid is low. This can be caused by
brake/shoe/pad/rotor wearing down i.e you need to do a brake job.

SOURCE: my 97 bmw 540i ran out of gas, it would not start

Just leave the ignition on for maybe 5 minutes.
Allow the fuel to get pumped back to the engine.
I'm assuming it's an auto.
Hold the throttle to the floor for about 20 seconds & then try turn it over. (Don't forget to take the foot off if it starts up!)
There's a good chance your fuel filter is clogged up with any dirt/debris that might have been in the end of your fuel tank.
I would suggest replacing the fuel filter in the mean-time even if it does start.
Fuel pumps are known to break if the fuel line runs dry, a bit like some water pumps I suppose. You should be able to hear this when the ignition is at position II (just before starting). If it's running this obviously isn't the problem.
Check the fuses if you can't hear the pump. (You never know).
Let me know how you get on!

SOURCE: how to find the starter

44f4228.jpg This is what your starter will look like. It's usually on the passanger side engine. Follow your red battery cable to the relay, then follow it from there until it reaches the starter. Make sure you remove the red cable from your battery before working on it.

To get firing order right it says 1342 1 being closest to front do u put on 1342 on the plugs? or the box or what?

I dont understand what your saying...does your bmw have a distributor, or coil pack?? if its distributor your distributor should have a number 1 on it put number one on that lug to the number 1 plug, then clockwise one lug is 3 so you run a wire from there to the number 3 cylender, the third one clockwise is 4, then 2. dont know if i answered what you were asking or not. if not, clarify a little more what your wanting and i will do my best to help.
