Question about Jeep Cherokee

Center differential I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited, 4WD all the time. When I make sharp turns (regardless of speed) it sounds like the wheels are catching and the differential is not working properly. In the past 6 months I have broken the front right rubber axle boot and the ceramic CV joint housing on the left side both were while making sharp turns to the opposite direction of the side the problem. My neighbor thinks the center differential is not working properly because the front left and rear right aren't spinning properly when turning to the right.

IF you are in constant 4wd then you will not have a centre diff unless you have an AWD. The difference is that AWD transfer cases have a centre diff that allows different road speeds between the front and rear diffs as in going over speed bumps and dips ion the road It is the same operation in the front and rear diffs that allow one wheel to go faster than the other when cornering. However in 4wd drive there is no diff action in the transfer case and both front and rear axles drive at the same speed regardless of speed bumps and dips in the road . This action produces what is known as torque wind up which results in the handling characteristics. This torque wind up places stress on all the drive line train and results in failures such as .that you describe.. This wind up is not noticeable when driving on loose surfaces slippery surfaces or in mud as it is allowed to escape when the wheels spin . If you have an AWD with diff lock capabilities then check that the diff lock is operating correctly

This center differential is located internal of transfer case on ALL WHEEL DRIVE transfer case they take special fluid for this clutch (differential) improper fluid cause them to stay locked most shops use transmission fluid it works on manually engage units but not on all wheel drives suggest getting fluid from dealer.

CV Joint Axle Replacement - How to Repair or Replace

Over time the rubber boots of the CV joints can become cracked, torn, or otherwise compromised. Once moisture and dirt get into a CV joint and grease makes its way out, the CV joints days are numbered. Signs of impending failures are a click-click-clicking or metallic crackling noise while turning and accelerating or a clunking upon deceleration. While one can repack, reboot, and rebuild CV axles, it makes more sense for the average do-it-yourselfer to procure replacement units and swap out the old axles. If a boot is torn or missing, it is possible to save the joint if caught early enough, but usually the damage has already been done. Replacing or servicing the entire CV joint axle assembly may be the smarter move since replacing a boot may involve removing an axle, which may also involve removing half or all of the vehicle's brakes and suspension.

You also could have received a bad axle. Sometimes the rebuilds don't hold good tolerance and can make the same noise you are trying to get rid of. Is it full-time 4wd? Maybe the driveshaft ujoint also.

You know for a fact no power is being sent to the front axle? This transfer case only sends power to the front axle when the rear axle is slipping. Are there any unusual noises in the front axle?

If it is the transfer case, replacing it is not too big of a deal. If you are the least bit confident of your abilities, then you can do it yourself. I believe you have the NP242 transfer case, but I could be wrong. There will be a tag on the back side of the case, facing the rear axle, to the left of the drive shaft. On that tag, it will tell you which case you have. You can either have yours rebuilt, or buy a replacement either new or used.

To remove the t-case, first drain the fluid. Next remove the front driveshaft by removing the four bolts holding the u-joint in place. Then remove the rear drive shaft by doing the same as the front driveshaft, only this time it's at the rear differential. Once the drive shaft is free, support the full weight of the driveshaft, not that heavy, and pull it out of the t-case and set aside. Disconnect the shifter linkage and wiring harness. Next, remove the bolts that connect the t-case to the t-case cross member. Lift slightly and support the tranny/t-case assembly and remove the cross member. The t-case isn't very heavy, but you don't want it falling on your head, so remember to support it as you remove the bolts that connect it to the rear of the tranny. Once you bring it out from under the Jeep, and it's rebuilt or you have another unit to replace it, installation is the reverse of removal. Just remember to refill the t-case with the proper fluid.

are you on dirt? or pavement...????????????????????????
we cant answer until you answer what 4wd option you have.
if that makes no sense, then read the operators guide,
it tells you what's there and how to use it.
read that first, then ask questions,?
and if Part time 4wd?, it';s not to be used on dry pavement only ICE.

If the rear axle starts rotating at a significantly higher rate than the front axle, hydraulic pressure builds up in the gerotor oil pump and causes the clutch pack, to progressively transfer torque to the front axle, until both axles return to the same speed
Quadra-Trac I was introduced in 2004-10, same as above but is automatic with no driver controls ,like above.
The Quadra-Drive system was introduced in 1999 and is based on the Quadra-Trac II system but adds limited slip differentials (the best full time system ,with great traction to all wheels all the time) 1999 to 04.
Quadra-Drive-II has electronic limited slip differentials or ELSDs 2005 up.

I have a 2002 silverado 4x4 with a manual t/c shift. After putting it into 4 wd it will not disengage back into 2 wd.


WHAT SURFACE are you driving on,...????? ICE , pavement?
part time, full time or AWD? which is it.
Autotack????
open diffs?
some AWD have a center diff, lock , is that on? (never on pavemnt)

and is PART TIME 4WD and is not AWD
if you drive on pavement that is not covered in ice or snow
that is wrong, the manual explains that.
part time 4wd only works on ice or dirt.
more simply,. 1 tire must slip, that is be on something like ICE or dirt .
Part time 4wd has no center differentail
and if you drive on pavement (dry) it will windup the drive line
and something breaks.
so REpost what you are driving on , the world is complex

the base version is not for Dry pavement, and if you make that
mistake, the gears will be very hard to impossible to UN SHIFT
due to driveline gross wind up, just like any jeep, 4wd.

Is this a manual 4 wheel drive system that can be shifted into 2 wheel drive? These type of systems should be in 2 wheel drive for tight turns. The drive train locks the differentials to make it 4 wheel drive and with the 4x4 engaged it creates this lunge grabbing effect.

When I'm in 4 wd the front wheels feel like the brakes are being applied when I make a sharp turn. No problems when driving straight or in 2 wd.


It sounds like you are driving in 4wd drive on dry pavement. The front drive axles do not work like the rear differential. When you turn, the outside front wheel must travel farther than the inside wheel, therefore they are traveling through the turn at different speeds. If you are on dry pavement, this causes the gears to bind. You don't notice this on slick surfaces because the outside wheel will slip instead of bind up the gears. You should not use 4wd on dry pavement. That's the advantage of push button, or shift on the fly, 4wd. You can shift back to 2wd when you encounter dry pavement. All wheel drive vehicles don't have this problem because they have a limited slip front differential as opposed to a locking differential on 4wd. Hope I didn;t confuse you too much.

sounds like you may have a bad front cv axle inspect it you may find that i'm right ,and no you can't disarm the all wheel drive . hope this helps you!

You need differential carrier and pinion bearings. Jeeps had many problems with the differentials in these years.
