Best idea is to go to the wreckers and take one off a vehicle . Not only will you get another clip but you will get to see how to remove it and refit it as well.

SOURCE: Shifter loose-Not the infamous bushing maybe broken cable

I have been suffering from the infamous deteriorated bushing for about 18 months now. Until now, have fixed it with tape. But I want to sell it now and need something more permanent. Anyway, I went to a junkyard today and managed to pull off the entire shift cable in about 1 hour. I'm a novice as well. A few clips at the transmission, pulling the bushing off at the gear shift. Hardest part was getting it through the firewall without totally destroying the rubber. If you have questions, e-mail me at whitehype@hotmail.com

Why won't my transmission shift out of park and shifter moves freely ?

you will need to replace the shift cable from selector to transmission

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

Automatic shift stuck nissan frontier

Shift cable broken or binding.
Have a trusted person try to shift it while you look at the linkage on the side of the transmission.
make sure engine is off, key on, parking brake set and all wheels are blocked in front and back (so you don't get run over)
Look for the small movement at the shifter linkage while the helper is trying to shift.
Many times, it's a small clip or mounting (cable to shift linkage) that has broken, gone missing, or twisted up.
Only do this on a flat surface with vehicle blocked in place.
Transmission shop is your next best bet if you do not feel comfortable. 12_24_2012_6_52_44_pm.jpg

2001 subaru legacy is stuck on drive and wont disengage

Sounds like the cable or linkage has broken in side at the shifter assembly or out side at the transmission selector.Have some one move the shifter while you look under the hood at the transmission lever ( Do this with the car not running but the key on and the parking brake and foot brake applied) and see if it is moving . If it is not moving trace the cable back to inside the car to diagnose if it is the cable or the handle assembly . normally it is the cable or the clips the connect the cable at either end.

2000 sable- can't shift out of park. shifter glides and needle on dash moves there's no gears shifting. is the transmission blown?

Not likely a blown transmission. More of a shifter cable issue. There is an adjustment nut on the ****** end. It could be loose or missing. If the nut is fine you have a broken cable.

2001 pontiac aztek Has floor mounted shift. Won't shift out of park.

First of all, you are stepping on the brake pedal when you try to shift. Had to ask.

It could be a number of things. I have a 2000ish Grand Am that wouldn't shift. The problem turned out to be the T-handle on the shifter. Most GM shifter handles come off the same way. If there is a rubber/leather boot, pull that down a little to expose a metal clip.
The metal clip can be pulled off straight for\ward (I think), and the handle comes off.
The shifter will be a tube with a plastic rod sticking out of it. Try pushing the rod in, and see if the shifter works. If yes, replace the handle. If not, the problem is probably down in the shifter.

When you step on the brake, there is a cable going from the brake pedal to the shifter. Step on the brake and you should hear something moving in the center console/shifter. If not, the cable could be detached or broken.

The shifter itself may be broken, but that can be tough to get to.
The could be something wrong at the transmission, or inside the trans.

5 spd manual trans, shifter doesn't have enough side to side movement to actuate 1st & 2nd gears. Shifter may be at fault? Bushings all seem intact at cable ends. It's the Lt cable that controls the...

Check the busings on BOTH ends of the shifter cables. First check underneath the center console that your bushing didn't break and cause your shifter to be limp and not move anywhere. This is a very common problem and can be remedied permanently by getting the delrin bushing found on ebay.

Next, if the above is fine, check the clips on the shifter side under the hood. There are 4 clips. Two hold the cable ends to the tower and slide horizontally. The other two hold the cables onto the transmission and slide on vertically. Sometimes these clips fall off and makes the shifter inoperable.

Finally if all of the above checks out the last possibility is that your shifter tower metal tab that the shifter cables attaches to is broken and sliding instead of pushing or pulling. This happened to my car but is not likely as my manual was in a raced Saturn previously so wear from that most likely caused it to break.

Check the cable clips at the trans. Sometimes these clips come out and won't shift. Horseshoe clips that hold the cable housing.
