Most likely your fuel sender in the tank is bad. It is possible that you have a bad gauge. The only way to tell for sure is to get to the tank sender and ground out the wire leading to the connector. This is more difficult with cars since the mid 80's that have the fuel pump in the tank also. Finding the right wire is not always clear without a wiring diagram. You are best off replacing the pump and sender at the same time since the fuel pump will be connected to the sender and since you have them both out you may as well cover yourself from having to get this done a second time when the pump wears out.

WHY MY 2002 MITIBISHI MONTERO SPORT FUEL GUAGE WONT READ WONT READ

Could be the gauge itself or could be the tank transducer which has a wire coming to it.
I would order a "Chilton" manual for your year make and model from eBay. ($25.00 including shipping)
The other choice is to take it to a shop.

We have a 95 mitsubishi montero. the car will

I'll check my information on adjustment of the neutral safety switch. In the meantime to access the fuel pump you'll need to take up the carpet (and some pad) in the back of the Montero. I believe there is an aluminum strip towards the back of it that will need to be removed, @ 4-6 screws I think. Once this is removed roll the carpet forward and look for an access panel on the floor of the truck (it should only be 2ft or so from the back gate over the tank. If you remove the access cover you'll see the access to the tank directly underneath it; in the end pretty easy to get to. I do believe the sending unit will be an assembly, the fuel pump can of course be seperated from. As fore mentioned I'll check further on the neutral safety switch.
I hope this may have assisted,
Tom

Neutral safety adjustment- we have a 95 mitsubishi montero. It has trouble starting up while in park. You have to play with the shifter. it starts right up when in neutral. my husband took a look at the...

OK, so the tank gauge will be easy to replace by removing the cover form the boot compartment area on the back side of the car and in the middle you will find a reund cover screwed. remove the screws and you will be able to access the guage.

regardingthe saftey switch adjustment, is the shifter loose? you can adjuste the cable on the left hand side of the gearbox above the GB sump is a mechanical cable coming form the back of the car towards the engine that can be adjusted.

Mitsubishi montero radio unlock

I had the same problem after replacing the battery on my Montero. I bought mine used but luckly the pervious owner had written the 4 digit number down in the owners manual. After finding the number, I had to enter it into the radio by using the station preset buttons. If you can't find or don't have it in the owners manual. You will have to get the model and serial numbers off the radio and contact Mitsubishi or another source to obtain the correct code to reset the radio.

Do all the warning lights in the instrument cluster come on when you turn the key? If Yes, then you need to check the neutral safety switch on the side the transmission[Automatic in your Montero?], as these are a known failure part for higher mile Monteros. You lose power to the starter solenoid as a result of the switch contacts going bad. Have someone put a test light on the solenoid wire at the starter motor, while you or a friend carefully tries to start the engine. If the circuit is working correctly, you'd see the test light turn on brightly. I'm betting you'll see no light, since I suspect the switch isn't letting power through.
