Yes it can run with it blocked off the only issue of concern is if the engine pings (rattles) under load this causes piston skirt damage or just burns a hole through the top of the piston.

I have a po401 code on my 96 Ford explorer

Your egr port is probably block..Apply vacuum to your EGR valve, while the vehicle is running..The vacuum should hold and the vehicle should run very rough or even go dead..If the valve doesnt hold vacuum,,then replace the valve..If the valve holds vacuum, but there is no difference or very little difference,,the EGR port is clogged in your intake..If all works fine ,,then suspect the DPFE sensor..This tells the computer if your receiving any flow..from the EGR

P1400 code

Hi there:

DTC P1400 - Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic (DPFE) sensor signal was below 0.2 volts. Enabling conditions: Run engine off or running self tests to check this code.

Blocking Action: This code can block the following monitors: Fuel Control, O2 monitor, catalyst, misfire, and EGR monitor.

Testing: Run the engine off and running self tests. If the code does not show up, it is an intermittent problem. Check for 5 volt reference that is low, damaged sensor or a short to ground in the signal wiring. Probes use an EGR position sensor signal which can be low because of a worn EGR pintle that drops too low in the EGR valve or for a warped EGR valve base.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

I had a diagnostics test don't on my 1997 Chevy Lumina. It showed several problem 1) Blocked passage on EGR system, Failed EGR valve, EGR solenoid faulty, Failed EGR pressure sensor where applicable...

All that Failed EGR valve, EGR solenoid faulty, Failed EGR pressure sensor and failed EGR vposition sensor may be telling you that is the EGR valve is faulty and not that it is loaded up with carbon. But I know you don't want to hear that as that EGR cost more than a can of carb clean and I don't blame ya!

If yoy have a multi meter, check out, go to the GM section for your motor, chose test EGR and there should be an explanation on how to run some test on your EGR before you buy a new one.

Code p0400 keeps coming up after changing the egr valve and sol.

It may be that the passage to the exhaust is blocked also.

Replaced egr valve. still getting p0401 code. engine is idling rough. thoughts

is there a steel tube that runs up to the valve cover? If so check to see that it isn't blocked. If it blocks up it will give you a code that the EGR isn't working and mess up the idle.
