On this particular truck the transmission is known very well for the "Transmission overdrive section to fail". From your description it will probably need an overhaul, but caution: Is the truck worth it, these transmissions will cost anywhere from about $1400 up to maybe $2000 with parts and labor included. The transmission valve body is a common replacement also. Best of luck....

If your thinking...........What does the overdrive section have to do with it?...............The powerflow of all gears goes through the overdrive.

I own a 1987 doge dakota and when I was driving it this morning a green triangle poped up under the gas gage what could that mean??

I assume this is a manual transmission dakota? The triangle is suppose to light up indicating to you to shift the transmission to a higher gear. This was in theory a device to help you get the best gas mileage. It is also known as a "dummy" light.

The gears grind when trying to shift and get stuck in gear. Is this my clutch or is this my linkage? If either how do I replace this myself?

It's the clutch. It might need to be bled of air or have parts like the slave and master cylinder replaced if leaking fluid.

I need to know how to time a 1987 dodge dakota 3.9 liter engine.

Are you doing a timing gear and chain if so the crankshaft gear has a dot that goes up top the camshaft has a dot that goes to the bottom you basically set dot to dot on timing gear and chain.

Loses power after it warms up. Has a knock like low on oil. Have to down shift to lower gear to get power. 1987 Dodge Dakota 4 cyc, standard shift

When you are low on oil you should hear an engine "ticking" noise at the top of the motor. If you hear an engine "knock" or repeated thud with a metallic sound, your engine will very likely require a significant repair or replacement. There is another possibility that you could have a broken timing chain but normally the engine would not stay running if that is the case. I would suggest you have an engine shop mechanic (not dealership) diagnose the knock and estimate a repair.
