Misfires and commonly caused by faulty spark plugs! replace the damage ones and clean the outside connectors.

It sounds like it could be an engine misfire. As the engine spins faster and faster that misfire makes itself less apparent. However on stops and low idle speeds it will be very obvious. If the check engine light is on that would also help you narrow down the issue.

My96 Towncar is now misfiring I beleive. It just started a couple days ago. My check engine light was on and I had it reset at Autozone with codes of P420 & P430. The problem seemed intermittent but...

On the money side of things I have bad news for you
The car is far from new,at 15 years old

That is about the life of exhaust converters

You have 2 Codes P0420 & PO430,those are
converters below efficiency

Also more troubling is the ignition misfires

You likely have had them possibly for years
and unaware of it.
Misfires cause raw fuel to enter the converters and
overheat and ruin them. Your are due for replacement

BUT--you have to work on correcting the misfires first
Then you will need 2 new converters
All 4 O2 Sensors ,as they will be ruined from the heat
or just over 100,000 miles.

You are 100% correct on all your statements
Spark Plugs very seldom misfire and do not correct
You have to diagnose those issues with finding
the cause of the misfire. As you said a combination
of things. Worn plugs,old O2 Sensors,clogged converters,
EGR Valve issues, vacuum leaks. All minor until you
combine them

Let us know how your proceeding or what you want to do

Most likely is that you have misfire. Try to isolate the cause of the misfire. The usual suspects would be spark plugs and coil connectors to the plugs from the coil. Also those Ignition coils are notorious to fail.If you can pinpoint on what cylinder you might have a misfire. A scanner reading would be helpful.Plus dose your service engine light illuminate or flash? If so reading those codes of would help.

get your car scanned (AutoZone does this for free) My TC has done this twice and both times it was an ignition coil gone bad. If that is the problem the engine scan will tell you what cylinder has the misfire.

My 1994 4.6L Lincoln Executive Series has water in the oil but the problem is not blown head gaskets.

How do you know? Could be the oil cooler (where the oil filter bolts to the engine)
