Number one is the forward most piston on the car, when the piston is at tdc, it will have a timing mark up front on the pulley pointing to an arrow, Or the valves will be at rest on number one, if you have the rocker covers off. If it has a distributor, the points will be pointing at number one plug wire. But the timing mark is what you are looking for anyway. Check it out, hope this helps.
