Question about Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

My son has a 1997 Pontaic Sunfire coupe with a 2.2 engine. His problem is with an intermittent loss of "tailights". The headlights stay on all the time, and the "turn signals" and "brakelights" work as they should. He should be able to turn the headlights and tailights on and off at his discretion, but he cannot. Could you help him?

Sounds like you either have a problem in the switch control unit or a faulty headlight relay. This may be one for an electrician.

The automatic transmission sticks (it's like the TCU isn't getting electrical signal) and the electrical windows stop working all at the same time. It's an intermittent problem. When the windows start...

sounds like a ground problem. Most common ground points are 2 in the cabin under the kick panels on each side. there are 4 or 5 in the engine compartment, 2 up by the headlights one on each fender well, and usually one on the fire wall. Some times I find them in the trunk. This is generic as I work on all makes and models of cars. To find the specific spots for your car you will need a manual. This is where I would start. Was driving down son's dirt road driveway returning home at low speed in 2nd gear in my 1997 sunfire when it suddenly started running rough with no power. it will start right up and idle is rough but...

Sure sounds like a typical case of dirty/contaminated fuel....or a broken vacumn supply hose around the intake manifold area, in neutral let it idl;e and look and listen for a hissing sound, or a broken black rubber hose.
Also have the computer scanned for any possible codes.
Another thing to look at is the catalyctic converter, put a vac. gauge on the engine and see if the vac drops to almost zero...indicating a plugged cat.
