Open Question

Cruze 2011. Problem with engine fan and temp gauge. Today driving vehicle turned on heater. Engine fan was already running. Vehicle msg: read ac off due to overheat. Temp gauge went past normal. Shut off heater. Temp gauge went back to norm. Fan continued. What to do?

That slushy brown stuff is signs of a blown head gasket. Have a code scanner hooked up to find out why the light is on, it will probably show coolant temperature sensor. Just out of curiosity, check the pvc valve (if your car has one), and see if it's clogged. If it is replace it, the crank case is not getting ventilated.

{: ) You didn't mention the model of your vehicle. Anyway, I admire your way of observation, and I'm sure you got the analogy by now. When the car is running, the engine rpm is higher, and so with the water pump, plus the wind velocity passing thru the radiator fins, can give sufficient engine cooling without the electric cooling fans. But when your vehicle stops, like sitting on a traffic, the engine rpm is lower, and so with the water pump, and there ain't enough wind to help.
This is why the electric cooling fans are very important in maintaining engine temperature at normal levels in any driving conditions.
Basically, the cooling fans are controlled by the engine control module (ECM). The ECM monitors input from various engine sensors and then will give an output signal based on its programmed instructions. The output signals will energize the corresponding fan relays, be it high or low speed.
You can start by checking first the easy ones like the fuses and relays. Cooling fans usually have square top transparent windows. Check the the underhood fuseblock label to locate. Might as well check all fuses to be sure.
Check the cooling fan relays for signs of overheating, and also for loose terminal seating.
Check the cooling fan if stuck, and also check the connectors if burned or melted. To rule out a defective cooling fan motor, you can check for continuity, or you may apply direct voltage to the two wires on each fan.
The mostv frequent cause of cooling fan malfunction is on the fuses, relays, and connectors.

Hi Bill, is the engine actually getting hot enough for the fans to come on? if the engine does have overheating problem (but you say the temp gauge reads normal) then i would check the operation of the engine temp switch, there are two, one for the gauge and one for the fans.

Not necessarily. The vehicle, in motion, has enough air flow through the radiator that the fan is usually not needed. The fan will run if the vehicle sits and idles for a while and the coolant temp rises since there is no air flow through the radiator. If you are worried about fan operation, there are two things to check. The fans will ALWAYS come on if the A/C is turned on. That is because the fans pll air through the A/C coil in front of the radiator. Air must flow through that at all times or pressure in the A/C lines will get too high. So test that circuit simply by running the engine and turning on the A/C. If the fans run, that part works. Now turn the A/C off. Let the engine run until the temp gauge gets to around 200-220 degrees F. The fan should come on about this time and run until the temp drops to about 190. This cycle will continue to keep the coolant from getting too hot. If the temp gauge gets into the red area and the fan has not come on, shut down the vehicle immediately to prevent engine overheating, and then troubleshoot that portion of the fan circuit.

Honda Pilot 2003, low engine temperature, thermostat was replaced several times, still the engine temp is low.


use a termo laser to check temp of coolant at filler cap ,with cap off run vehicle till you have hot heat coming out of your heater then check with laser. if it reads above 140 then you know 2 things . either the therm sensor is going bad or the temp gauge is bad , make sure the radiator fans come on ,if they do and you have good heat then you have bad gauge.

The cooling fans on my 2004 Pontiac Bonneville only run when the A/C is on. It is causing problems with Transmissionn shifting when they aren't running. I know the ****** problem is due to overheating...


The PCM is controlling the fans. It is looking at the coolant temp sensor. Once it sees the coolant temp get around 225 degrees it starts turning on the fans.

What temp does the vehicle get to?

Have you compared the reading on the gauge to the actually reading that the PCM is seeing with a scan tool? Many times the vehicle temp will be fine but the gauge will be wrong. Sometimes the opposite.

What engine do you have 3.8 or 4.6 liter?

Very correct the ECT is a 2 wire thermistor,when coolant temp increases, the resistance andsignal voltage decrease,If you disconnect the sensor the fan goes on, you just trouble shooted the vehicle cooling fan switch, If anything the signal to the gauge itself may be non-op and not getting to the indicator, try this with vehicle at warm up temperature if you turn the A/C does the fan turn on.it should if it doesnt the power juction box (fuse and relay in engine compartment should be checked, for any opeen fuses, By the way the guage information is from the PCM

Engine temp gauge reading hot, no leaks in system. Heater does not work most of the time. only blows cold air.


Hi!!
Make sure there is no blockage in front of radiator or condenser coil. It seems like the cooling fan clutch may be quitting. When the fan clutch is working properly, if you turn the fan with your hand when the engine is cold, it should turn freely, if you do it after driving the vehicle when the engine is HOT, the fan would be pretty stiff and should not turn free at all. By the year of the vehicle, I believe that's where the problem is.

OVerheating and dumping antifreeze


sounds like you have a fan issue if it over heated while you had ac on and was stopped it would not cool the engine or the condensor try turning the vehicle on turn the ac on with hood open spray the condensor with water hose it is in the very front of the car see if ac starts blowing colder most people overlook the basics.

Temp gauge often reads too hot, engine normal.


It sounds like your cooling fans are not comming on by themselves, but when you turn on the ac it forces them to turn on. Make sure relay is good, then replace coolant temp sensor, this may have failed no telling pcm to turn on cooling fans. Thanks

2003 Honda Civic runs hot when idling.


Check the cooling fan switch. It appears your auxiliary electric cooling fan isn't going on when at idle. and engine temp increases. While you are driving, air is being rammed thru your radiator as you cruise along, so it isn't overheating, at idle, that isn't happening, and the fan should go on as the temp goes up. When the ac is switched on, the fan is being signaled to operate due to the heavy ac load on the cooling system.
