Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
I've tried pressing on the release button while trying to lift the rear liftgate. I've tried pushing it while pulling on the strap. There is a little bit of give, but not much. The light comes on but it is jammed closed and I have my dog's crate in the back and we have an appointment tomorrow with the vet, so I have to get it open. Thanks in advance.
Hi I'm Peter sorry to hear you are in such a pickle. I would say try to take the lift gate handle off and work the two levers manually but it's really hard to do if you have never done it on that truck. I actually have my son's sitting in front of the house and I will warn you those tail gate handles do break so be careful you down hurt yourself.. I am thinking maybe if it's one of those camping chair bags it's no great loss so I would get a very sharp kitchen knife and slide in the crack between the tail gate and the side of the bed of the truck afar as you can and try to cut the strap as far in as you can. It is most likely a piece of it in the latch bar that goes into the little u shaped bar that holds it closed. If you can get it cut back far enough and push in on the tail gate as you pull the handle if you can get ahold of the other end you may be able to pull it out if you get it cut right up against the latch assembly. It may take working it some or getting someone else to get in the bed and kick the tail gate or push. You may be able to take the whole latch assembly out but that would be a lot of work and I am not sure of your physical capabilities. I am disabled myself with severe back injuries so I understand. You might could pull the handle and the strap just get a long heavy duty flat head screwdriver to pry with but you might damage the tailgate or paint. Another thought comes to mind might sound stupid but get a water hose turn it on have it ready then get one of those really long fireplace matches or a skinny stick dipped in gas or diesel light it and stick it through the crack all the way to where the strap is tuck. The strap is plastic and will catch fire and melt dripping out of the way of the latch. Hey it's a truck so there's nothing really right there to flame up and you have the water hose on running just in case. Be sure to let the plastic catch fire and burn completely it will smoke and stink oh yea don't let it drip on you i's not like melted wax when it hits your skin it will give you a severe burn. But with the strap melted and run down you should be able to open the gate right away. Just make sure there are no flammable liquids close. good luck and hope you get it fixed tonight to make the vet, let me know what happens.

I slammed the door shut one time and the door wood not open at all. I had to take the inside door handle off and found that the cables simply came off of their post (inside the door) on the outside part of the door handle. More than likely only one cable has come off its post on your van. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: REAR BRAKE DRUM WON,T COME OFF
Make sure the wheel turns and adjuster backed off . If you can see a Countersunk screw in the face of the hub remove it. If hitting it fails , usually you can see two small 8,10 or 12 mm holes in the face of the hub . Find the correct bolts and screw them into the the hub , it should force the the drum to pop off . What car is it , and does it have tapered wheel bearings on the outside of the drum?

Sounds like you have a wiring problem to your liftgate. Check the wires where they come out of the body, and go into the liftgate. If they are good, check fuses, or possibly a module.

HAVE A FRIEND PUSH ON THE GLASS WHEN YOU TRY TO OPEN IT THE NEXT TIME. THE LATCH INSIDE IS LOOSE AND NEEDS TO BE TIGHTENED. BY PUSHING ON THE HANDLE IN THE GLASS DOOR YOU CAN RELIEVE THE PRESSURE FROM THE LOCK AND OPEN IT THEN LOOK ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HANDLE IN THE GLASS THERE IS A SMALL METAL PEG WITH A NUT AT THE BOTTOM I THINK IT 7/16 OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. TIGHTEN IT UP AND YOURE ON YOUR WAY
