I recommend that you replace it as soon as possible; My dad had a similar problem that you had then when he turn it on it made a noise at first and he left it for at least a couple weeks or so and 1 day his car started to loose power and he was doing 70 and he had his foot on the gas when he noticed he was doing 60 and he pressed down on the pedal but to no prevail until he shut off the A/C and he regained the power back and so he got it replaced with a new one. So I definitely would replace it as soon as you can or you will experience it like my dad experienced it.

Rob, assuming this is a 4X4? Sounds like a bearing. They can vibrate, snap, clunk, all kinds of terrible noises or vibrations.
Axle u joints will also do this. Is it all wheel drive?

Sounds like a bearing going bad where do i look first

a rod bearing makes noise when you are just barely pulling .. it likely will quiet down as you accelerate and decellerate .. you can rev the engine up a bit then let up on the gas just enough to keep that rpm ..a rod bearing will rattle a lot then ... if a thud like noise happens when you are accelerating . then it could be a main bearing .. if the noise is there all the time and sounds like a rattle then its more likely a valve problem .. old oil can cause the lifters to stick and rattle continuously .. if the noise you hear is a squeal then you could have a bad bearing in the idler pully (for fan belt) or alternator .. if thats the case you can put a drop of oil on the bearings one at a time until the squeal goes away .. that will identify which part is going bad .. there are other less likely bearings that can go bad .. like the cam, distributer, air compressor and water pump .. each have their own type noise ..

Bearings or cv joint?

Wheel bearings.
For quickly ruling out the CV Joint, in a parking lot, turn one way in a sharp circle, then the other way circle sharply. A clicking sound is indicative of a bad c/v joint or 1/2 shaft.
Humming while in motion (most of times it will only occur during a specific speed range - over a certain speed goes away) says a wheel bearing is shot.
Normally you should replace both at the same time... however you can check with a laser temp gauge each front hub after driving. The hotter one is bad - or a less scientific approach is to swerve going down the road. and listen for an decrease in noise going in one diretcion over the other.
If you are turning the steering wheel right, and the noise goes away, the right bearing is bad and vice versa.
