Car will not reach normal operating temperature. We have replaced the thermostat. What is the next diagnostic step?

Oil sludge found in Air Cleaner, replaced PCV and filter and cleaned and had to replace filter in 6 months due to yellow oil sludge


Oil sludge can be caused by a few different things. I don't think you have head gasket/head problems as you say you've been using the vehicle for 6 months.

However, do check your oil dipstick and see if the same sludge (also known as 'mayonnaise') is on it. Mayonnaise on a dipstick is a symptom of a defective head gasket that is allowing coolant into the oil system.

If your vehicle looses/uses coolant this may be a sign of a faulty head gasket/head.

Very short- repeated - journeys can allow sludge to form, simply because on short journeys the engine does not reach its normal operating temperature. The engine is 'cool'.

It can also be caused by a faulty thermostat. If the thermostat is jammed in the open position it can take a long time for the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Other than changing the thermostat (maybe for one that opens at a higher temperature - a 'winter' thermostat) there's no practical way of checking it. Replacement is the easiest and cheapest option. It's not a difficult job.

It's not unknown for a thermostat to have been removed by a previous owner (for various reasons..). If you're going to check if there's a thermostat there - replace it anyway.

If you're not losing/using coolant and there's no mayonnaise on the dipstick it may well be due to repeated short journeys where the engine doesn't reach normal operating temperature - or the thermostat.

Your coil that allows air to pass through for A/C or heat could be plugged or the thermostat is sticking.

Temperature gauge needle dropped to the cold side for no reason. all fluids are good. then the check engine light went on.


Your thermostat sound like it is stuck open.
How it works is your thermostat is designed to be closed when your engine is cold.
After you start your car your engine coolant circulates in the engine block.
This helps the engine reach its normal running temperature.
When your engine reaches the normal running temperature the thermostat slowly opens allowing the coolant to circulate through your radiator. the radiator cools the coolant and maintains your engine temperature so your engine does not over heat.
If your thermostat is stuck open your coolant is not permitted to allow the engine to reach normal running temperature. Causing your low temperature reading.

2005 Mercury Monterey with check engine code P0128; what does it mean?


P0128 is Coolant Thermostat ( Coolant Temp Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature ). The thermostat may be stuck open, preventing normal operating Temperature from beeing reached.How is the heat inside the car is it below normal ? Or the engine Coolant Temperature Sensor may be faulty and needs to be replaced. Good Luck and have a good XMASS.

more than likely the thermostat has stuck open. Or opening to soon not allowing the car to reach normal operating temperature. I would start by replacing the thermostat. Clearing the code and running a drive cycle and see if the code comes back. if the code does not return problem solved. if it does return replace the coolant temp sensor.

Check the following :

BMW Code PO128
This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125
In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant

temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.

You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.
A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
solutions
Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat

What is the normal operating temperature for a 1994 jeep grand cherokee 5.2 l


Normal operating temperature is between 180 and 210 degrees fahrenheit. Replacement thermostats for 318 cu. in. V-8's (5.2 liter) are rated at 195 degrees.
