Question about 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7
I have no outside or inside door handles. I was using long needle nose pliers to grab a rod thru the inside door handle to push back on the rod towards the door jam and the door would open , now I think the rod has fallen to the bottom of the door, now cant get door open how do I get the door panel off from the inside?
It should still be possible, using a little bit of force. all screws and bolts holding on the panel are accessible, even with the door closed...but the panel maybe slightly pinched on the front and rear ends, and possibly on the bottom...but pulling hard on the handle once every bolt and screw is removed should force the panel loose

I'm guessing you can try to go in from the window and see if you can wiggle or pull the linkage to pop the door open...

I just had this problem yesterday, and after pulling in to a heated garage for just a minute it closed fine. Obviously we cant all do this, so get yourself a graphite powdered lubricant from your local parts store. It is a dry lubricant that will keep the latch moving, and since it is a dry powder, it will not freeze.
