My Toyota Corolla 1997 1600 GLEi automatic has developed a very strong surge when I engage drive.

Has developed a very strong surge when I engage drive or reverse. It returns to idle if I drop back to neutral.I have had the fuel injector assembly cleaned and accelerator cable replaced but problem persists. Toyota mechanics at my Cape Town garage cannot solve the problem.

Possible fuel tank leak. Is the smell inside the car? If so there is an inspection cover under the back seat. If outside mist likely the fuel tank filler neck us rusted and leaking.

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you replace the transmission fluid and filter. If it's burnt, issues like this occurs. It can be a bad TCM (transmission control module) too, have it checked and replaced if necessary.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

2005 Toyota Corolla with 36,000 miles Transmission now "jumps" into gears

hi,
when the check engine light comes on, your car goes into a mode where instead of everything being normal, things are forced, to try and compensate for something else being wrong. It most likely does need a new timing belt, and a complete tuneup INCLUDING plugs and wires. we have a 1984 toyota corolla and it purrs like ground rice, I suggest the tuneup to continue proper rice production.

1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.
