Question about 1999 Ford Taurus
I totally agree with jrk05a...I don't know why these other guys are mentioning things like bearing leaks and valve cover gaskets unless I didn't get the whole question!?...whenever you have an oil leak, always look for the highest point on the engine and the front of engine as any leak in the front part of engine will blow the oil backwards all over the engine and you'll never know where its coming from...look for any suspected oil leak at the highest part of engine stating in front...

SOURCE: Oil Pan Gasket
Before removing the oil pan, drain all the oil from the car. You should be able to remove the pan with basic tools, not sure what socket size though. Once you have the pan off compare the new gasket with the new one to make sure it is the right one. Scrape off the old gasket and replace with the new using a high temp gasket sealant to attach the gasket. Bolt back on to the engine refilling with new oil and checking for leaks. NOTE: your oil pump is protected by your oil pan so be careful not to hurt while sliding in and out of place

If you have oil coming down between the transmission and the engine where they meet your problem is with the rear main seal. It seals the back of the crankshaft so no oil comes out. Over time it tends to leak especially if the oil changes haven't been done on time or you live on dirt roads. Where the transmission and engine meet there should be a metal shield but it may be already removed. Just pry that back and see if there is oil. Depending on the color tells your rear main seal for the engine or the front seal on the transmission. Hope that helps.

SOURCE: 2000 ford focus oil leak
Sounds like the valve cover gasket, clean off all the oil on the engine with a pressure washer or a steam cleaner and then drive it and recheck for the leak, that way you can pin it down for sure.

my opinion is to do an oil change while you are at it to save some stress. draining the old oil will help from having to hold the pan full of oil and tipping it over, etc. then simply take off the bolts, which should be anywhere from8-12 or so. make sure you clean both sides of the pan. the lip and the side thats on the block. place the new gasket on the pan and put four nuts [corners are best] finger tight. then insert the rest of the bolts and make sure you dont over torque!!!

you oil pan bolts of the bottom of the oil resivour the gaskit fits in between the surfaces where the pan meets it creating a seal witch in your case needs to be replaced this procedure replaces that gaskit to create a new seal
