Step by step
more that then FSM shows?
it has 1 ends. you remove both ends.
and it just comes out. (pulled)
at the transmission is an attachment, you unscrew that (CCW)turn it counter clockwise, and its off
then gain access to the rear of the speedometer head.
that is the tricky part, on most cars.
early years, some folks can remove this end without cluster pulling.
unless less you are huge, are you, ?? we can not guess what YOU
might do. use a flash light to see up under the dash, and that fitting.

did you watch the Utube videos first. if not why not now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvyVWv_pXOQ
he shows the speedo end clip, well, (this is the only hard part that clip)
on some newer cars, they added, cross bracing. (side collision upgrades) and is very hard work on these cars under dash.
do tell.

U tube again, if youre too big.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLhBwzL-TFA

pull cluster 101 (note he's a smart guy, reads the book first....")

no tilt wheel. sure one more thing, that can make this easier. he says
and is correct.
this is typical of all cars. so watching videos on all cars, will help
do so and win.

SOURCE: SPEEDOMETER CABLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED

There is no cable on the 93 Prizms.  The problem is one of two things, either the "vehicle speed sensor" or the instrument cluster itself.   I also have a 93, and the speedometer started acting up a while ago. Sometimes it would register 0 then it would spike up to 70 and stay there at highway speeds then back to 0 upon slowing.  I replaced both items from the junk yard.  The speed sensor at an auto parts store will run about $160, and a new cluster will cost A LOT more at the dealer! I first replaced the speed sensor with no luck ($5.00 at the junkyard) the same thing happened 0 or 70.   I replaced the cluster today ($13.99 at the junkyard).  That was it! Problem solved.  The cluster is EASY to replace, remove the 2 screws from the trim piece and remove trim.  Next, remove the 4 screws that hold the cluster in place; 2 at the very top (don't remove the ones just above the cover glass) and two at the bottom.  Pull one side of the cluster out; there are 3 plugs; squeeze the center of the plugs to release the clip and wiggle them free.  Connect the replacement cluster, but before screwing it in, do a check to make sure all the panel lights work.  I had a few that were burned out, so I used the old cluster lights to replace them.   I would try replacing the cluster first.  Good luck!

Why is speedometer sticking?

if the odometer does not stick, watch carefully , the 1/10s digit.
drive slow, no bumps when it sticks and watch ODOMeter
if odometer dont stick the needle side is, as all do this old.
for 90s cars, vast numbers stick and more every day
as owners hedge , gee $200 fix .or more.......
get a GPS speedo and use that, or glue on a cell phone holder
and use a free app, (GPS speed) to see speed.
there you go, all choices.
the cable has 2 ends.
head end if dead, the speedo and odometer stall.
the other end, has gear to trans tail shaft,
so it measures actually road wheel RPM and converts that to speed.
the cable can be broken on both end or the middle.
the bottom end can fail strip out or its gear go bad.
fixed them all, every which way but loose.
easy no? easypeasy-japaneezey
if the odometer freezes too, that means the cable end is bad.850403f4-cfb0-4822-8bea-bd0bef80f062.jpg

Ha a new speedo cable but the odometer doesn't work. Why?

Because of the plastic gear on the odometer shaft is some teeth . You'll have to replace the entire speedometer . Or take the vehicle to a shop that does those types of repairs. I went to the junkyard and bought the entire instrument cluster for under 50.00$ . Did it myself. Tedious job don't be in a rush could break something else. .

Speed odometer

Most likely a broken speedometer cable. Possibly cable end and gear popped out of the transmission.

Speed odometer

LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.
all answers now, are 3cylinder

did the odometer quiet too?
key fact
and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.
snamps
the speed goes dead
the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.

you may have to check the teeth on the drive and driven gears at the end of the cable and the gear that this gear is driven off of.the teeth may not be in good condition and need replacing.

Why would my speedometer not work?

There could be three possible problems. First, check to ensure the odometer cable in inserted into the transmission properly. Secondly, check to ensure the cable has not been cut, severed or damaged in any other way. Last, remove the dashboard covering over the odometer and lightly push the odometer dial forward. Be sure to follow these steps in the order given.

Speedometer and Odometer quick working. How do I

Follow the speedometer cable from the firewall, down to the transmission. It should bolt in the transmission, remove the cable from the transmission, and turn the gear to check to see if speedometer is working, if not, it's most like the speedometer head unit.
